What fish is this?
Found this tiny thing floating in el cap, grabbed it hoping to see what the fish are eating and was a little confused once I had it on the deck. WTH is it?

It's a log perch. Never seen one before in California.

Re: What fish is this?
Wonder how it got to El Cap? Not native to here and not a common aquarium fish.

I haven't had too much luck at most lakes, but the bass smashed the Smithwick Rogue in that color at Morena.Everydog wrote: Sun Nov 05, 2023 7:54 pm Been killing them out there on my log perch imitators, and now I know why!

And then in true bureaucratic fashion, don't let those fish taxpayers use it. After all, fish defecate and fornicate in the water.
Like Loveland and Sweetwater dams. For years fishing wasn't allowed, now it is only shore fishing.

Bigscale Logperch were inadvertently introduced to CA in a shipment of sunfish to ponds on Beale AFB in Yuba County in 1953. The ponds were flooded and the fish were flushed into the Feather River. They have since made their way anywhere water from Northern CA is pumped.

Re: What fish is this?
Water is sometimes pumped into El Cap from San Vicente which in turn gets water from the Colorado River. If log perch are anywhere in the system, they could have gotten to El Cap that way. But it does not appear that the California Aquaduct from Northern California joins with the Colorado River Aquaduct.Queue wrote: Wed Nov 08, 2023 10:53 am Bigscale Logperch were inadvertently introduced to CA in a shipment of sunfish to ponds on Beale AFB in Yuba County in 1953. FYI, fish eggs can be moved by birds. Carp eggs (and probably other fish) can survive the trip through a duck. Fish eggs are like caviar to a duck. So if log perch eggs are in a lake not too far away, ducks could conceivably spread the fish.

Looks like the furthest south lake the California Aquaduct feeds is Castaic. Possibly birds hopscotched the fish from one lake to another until they got here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Aqueduct
Nice looking fish regardless of how it got here. Sure the bass would agree too.

Pulled straight from Dill and Cordone (1997), History and status of introduced fishes in California 1871-1996 Fish Bulletin 178, but it could be misinformation...what do I know?

Re: What fish is this?
I was not contradicting anything you said, read my post again if you think I was. You said that the log perch could get anywhere that water from Northern California was pumped but it does not appear that Northern California water is pumped into El Capitan. So how did the log perch get to El Capitan if the closest lake the water is pumped to is Castaic?Queue wrote: Mon Nov 13, 2023 11:47 amPulled straight from Dill and Cordone (1997), History and status of introduced fishes in California 1871-1996 Fish Bulletin 178, but it could be misinformation...what do I know?

Re: What fish is this?
As your post indicates, San V has an aqueduct that introduces water from the San Diego canal in two places (by the launch ramp and in the Aqueduct Arm)which gets water from the State Water Project (Northern California) and the Colorado River Aqueduct. The Bigscale Logperch, Striped Bass, Shimofuri Goby and Quagga Mussels all found their way to SD from the combination of water sources pumped to fill our reservoirs most of the time.Gotfish? wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 6:14 amI was not contradicting anything you said, read my post again if you think I was. Wouldn’t surprise me if American Shad (State Water Project) and Gizzard Shad (Colorado River Aqueduct) found their way here. They’re moving this way…

1. Do the Shimofuri gobies eat quagga mussels or is that mainly the round gobies?
2. Do you expect the local fish to evolve to eat quagga mussels? I have noticed a lot fewer mussel shells along the shore than a few years ago, is that what happened?
3. Any of these other invasive species eat quagga mussels?
4. You opinion on the invasive algae weeds in SD Bay, see my post today?
