Best Wind Direction ?
Recently I have been looking into wind direction and how it can affect the fish. I’m still lost on the subject but does anyone have any in-site to what wind direction is best for fishing ?

The way I learned (which could very well be wrong) is to fish the wind at your front, or blowing towards you. The reason being is that the top water current will blow any forage towards you and any fish looking for a meal will follow that forage.

I agree with you. When the wind comes up in the morning and I’m fishing a point, I cast against the wind and seem to have better results over the years.Zach wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 8:23 am The way I learned (which could very well be wrong) is to fish the wind at your front, or blowing towards you. Its always interesting to see these types of responses and learn that I'm doing things the opposite of the correct way almost every time, haha. No wonder I have such little luck. I've always cast with the wind, with the thought process being my bait would naturally move/float on its own and not need to cast over and over and over again. But the method described above makes a lot of sense now that I think about it.

I wouldn't call it wrong. All the good practices in the world are just to slightly increase your chances at landing a fish. The best tip anyone can give you is to just go where the fish are!jwacky wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 8:52 am Its always interesting to see these types of responses and learn that I'm doing things the opposite of the correct way almost every time, haha. Re: Best Wind Direction ?
I used to remember a saying the ole salty dogs on the cattle boat would repeat, something about, "Wind in your face, you're in the right place."
Now, we're completely adverse casting into the wind, simply because of the dreaded backlash, but I have it seen prove true countless of times.
I treat it like fly fishing for trout in moving water. More often than not, they will be facing upstream Much like fish will face into the wind in stillwaters.
Also, because the wind will push the zooplankton that the bait fish feed on, the bait fish will follow that. I think there is a misnomer that says the wind pushes the bait fish, but I think it's the wind pushing the bait fish's food source, and the bait fish moving with it.

Re: Best Wind Direction ?
Aside from whether that stupid fish is going to bite, I just think the line and drift and everything is better casting into the wind. With is ok sometimes. SIdeways usually results in bad presentations and bait doing a pendulum thing, line blowing into the cover on the cast. There is a time for everything though....sometimes little choice. Then there is the question of what to fish in the wind!

Wind in your face because the wind pushes the boat drift. If the wind is to your back, your bait will be under the boat and eventually tangled.DarkShadow wrote: Wed Aug 16, 2023 9:30 am I used to remember a saying the ole salty dogs on the cattle boat would repeat, something about, "Wind in your face, you're in the right place."

Fresh water, I’ve always experienced better fishing on the bank or structure that the wind is blowing against (in your face if you’re on shore or to your back if you’re on the water) The wind tends to push everything the micro stuff is feeding on.
Offshore, wind in your face in a drift. Also wind/current breaks can be your best friend in finding fish.

Re: Best Wind Direction ?
Wind disturbs the surface and stirs up the water itself, which reduces visibility.
It stirs up sediment, which also affects water clarity, and the fish's visibility.
One of my favorite tactics when the wind comes up is finding mudlines. Throw in them and hang on.

Re: Best Wind Direction ?
A little bit of wind makes lure fishing a lot better as the waves scatter light and the fish can't see as well. Unless you are fishing shallow, it doesn't stir up much sediment. Fishing mudlines sounds like an idea worth trying though.
Wind will push plankton which in turn attracts bait fish which in turn attracts the bigger fish.
