Re: North County trips.
Using Surfline, I picked the easiest window on Thursday morning, still in bad conditions for LC, as far as I understand it... and just two perch on it in the gentilest sea state that morning had to offer. It started at 3-4 feet and grew steadily to 5-6 feet waves with a high tide.

Re: North County trips.
Full disclosure, about a week ago, I had a dream of finding the motherlode of sand crabs! Back to mid Del Mar Sunday, like a broken record, and I don't see that changing too often. I mostly fished with Gulp Sandworms, but ran a brief, not very skilled comparison with dehydrated lugworms. That Gulp sand worms seem preferable, but the dehydrated lugworms got bitten, and caught a few. Grass was okay, but when it's not, fishing north, like around the lifeguard tower 15 or more north, is better.
All fish were perch, including two biggish pregnant female BSP and a chunky Walleyed surf perch, no other species. At one point, I caught 5 perch in a row, but mostly I searched for bites with the outgoing tide. Throwing a heavier egg sinker on the c-rig worked well around the rocks. I think mine was 1.5 or 2 ounces. The next tempting day will be Sunday or Monday, according to the forecasts. Let's see. Happy fishing to all.

Re: North County trips.
The big female BSP slabs should start showing in greater numbers the next couple of months with ravenous appetites as they get closer to birthing . Thanks for the report !

Thanks for the report.. Productive day... 1-1/2 or 2 oz weights are pretty heavy, must have been some surge or current... That much weight, I'd have to get out my "Big Boy" rod.

Hi Butch, for throwing into the holes in the reef, it worked well because the bait stayed where it needed to be in the holes or along the edges of the reef, or I could drag it on the desired trajectory around this structure.

Re: North County trips.
I tried to post a Google Earth link that shows a lot of the coastal structure near the surfline in case anyone wants to look at it, but it didn't work.
I found it by selecting the option for historical imagery in the Basemap menu and finding the image provided for

Re: North County trips.
I wonder how much the "soft structure (sand)" has changed since 2017... I would think that the "hard structure (rocks/reefs)" would be pretty much the same... Maybe covered or exposed by the sand...Everydog wrote: Thu Feb 19, 2026 10:44 pm I tried to post a Google Earth link that shows a lot of the coastal structure near the surfline in case anyone wants to look at it, but it didn't work.

Re: North County trips.
The portions that I have seen at low tide are similar, and there is actually a more recent one with this kind of resolution, Feb 14th 2022. One man said it's just a little more sand lately. That doesn't actually answer your question about soft structure very well, and I don't know.Midnightpass wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 8:13 amI wonder how much the "soft structure (sand)" has changed since 2017... Hi all, I’m going to be visiting Carlsbad area this weekend and hoping to sneak away to the beach to get in a short session. Any recommendations you guys have for beaches would be appreciated, DM me.

Re: North County trips.
I don’t get up to north county all that much but if you’re not wanting to travel much farther than where you’re staying, south carlsbad state beach was where I surf fished for the very first time. I caught a handful of perch and had zero clue what I was doing. I don’t know how the access is, but we were staying at the campground and I walked down to the beach from there.RBFishing wrote: Wed Feb 25, 2026 11:47 pm Hi all, I’m going to be visiting Carlsbad area this weekend and hoping to sneak away to the beach to get in a short session. Re: North County trips.
I was staying in Carlsbad Village the last few days… I only managed to get out on Tuesday morning from 6-7:30 am.. I got 4-hand sized and 1-dink perch on dried blood worms, at the end of Carlsbad Village Dr. to about 200 yds south.. I believe there is a reef a little farther south, but I didn’t have time to explore… Good luck…RBFishing wrote: Wed Feb 25, 2026 11:47 pm Hi all, I’m going to be visiting Carlsbad area this weekend and hoping to sneak away to the beach to get in a short session. Mike, it sure looked fishy, other than the water looked a little stained… Don’t know if it was the last rains or what.. I think it’s a little early for a red tide… But I did better than the last couple of trips to Bolsa Chica…Mike M wrote: Thu Feb 26, 2026 6:17 amLooks pretty fishy right now on this web camRBFishing wrote: Wed Feb 25, 2026 11:47 pm Hi all, I’m going to be visiting Carlsbad area this weekend and hoping to sneak away to the beach to get in a short session. Those Sand Crabs show up in numbers on the surface, when the Sea Temperature hits 64 degrees here in Newport Beach. It was the official opening of Surf Fishing season here, for Spotfin and Corbina. We all know the Barred Perch like that colder water but they eat Spinners, Spoons, JerkBaits, Swimbaits, Garden Snails, most any Tidbit that moves with the Surf. We used to catch the crap out of them on chunks of frozen Anchovies too. Gluttons. I never liked to eat them, too soft, until my Mom made Fish Cakes with them. I was the only Kid in School with Fish Cakes and Tartar Sauce for Lunch.

The Buena Vista Lagoon in Oceanside drains out into the ocean after a good amount of rain. I fished down there on Monday and it was flowing pretty good.Midnightpass wrote: Thu Feb 26, 2026 7:02 amMike, it sure looked fishy, other than the water looked a little stained… Don’t know if it was the last rains or what.. I found my way to North Ponto beach. Caught 1 hand sized BSP. Tide was -1.1 at mid day so I was able to wade out far.
