Son’s First Halibut in Mission Bay 1/13
Rented a skiff to bond with my son. Didn’t have hi expectations especially since we are beginners. Was about to call it a day and he snagged a legal halibut on live sardine. He was so pumped and now is addicted.

TP 6-16
Hit the surf 7 am. Threw LC almost the entire time. 3 solid bumps 2 hookup’s that resulted in spool (almost I had to palm the spool so I don’t lose my braid) left at 10 30. Lots of sand crabs but they were very small.

Re: Torrey Pines Skunk-Away
I have not fished TP much in recent years. But if I was going to pick a day with the best shot of getting cruising fish in the shallow water, it would be the last few days of July and a few days into August and fish the hours right before high tide, up between North TP and Del Mar City Beach. The ...

Re: Torrey Pines Skunk-Away
The biggest fish I caught from the surf was from North Torrey Pines right in front of the parking lot.

Good size YFC. Way to go. How were the conditions, i.e., kelp & grass in the water? PB & south has been a mess past 3 days, unfishable
It was actually not bad at all, fairly clean with some grass here and there. I started out casting from the shore to about 60-70 feet out with zero success ...

8/5 & 8/6 north county
Salad was ungodly, yet again. Went around low tide 7-8
pm. Water temp is still wonderful, but with that comes a bunch of swimmers/surfers and, recently at least, snorkelers.
Anyway, fishing was pretty good. In those about 1.5 hours each day for those 2 days, we got 3 croaker, 1 sargo, a couple ...

Re: Great fishing if you are vegan
Yum. Dried seaweed is delicious and there is no size or quantity limit. Never tried to make it myself, might be able to use my smoker to dry it out though.
This is not correct. There is a 10 lb wet daily bag limit for seaweed, and eel grass, surf grass, and surf palm are prohibited species ...

1st Local Suf Trip In A While
I have missed fishing the local beaches lately, so I made a quick trip to Seal Beach with a few blood worms... There was a lot of eel grass to contend with, but did manage a decent corbina and calico... A small corb and two dink sand bass... Nothing huge but a fun day... And I managed to get that ...

Tulum Mexico..
We did our yearly trip to Tulum Mexico... We meet a bunch of friends down there every year and it's not a fishing trip... I fish an hour or less, some days, while my bride lounges under a palapa... This area is getting more devoid of sea life every year... They are constantly cleaning up the ...

Calico poacher
Went to one of my local little spots. Watched a guy pull up an 8” calico on shrimp, bash it over the head with a rock then filet it. Called fish and game took a few mins to get a live operator. As soon as he saw me on the phone he packed his stuff and took off before fish and game arrived. I’m going ...

Oktoberfest
Trick-or-treaters are gone and October is at the end. Wish I could fish as much as I did back in June but in all honesty October has been a decent month.
PB calico. This alone would make it a fine month. Got stuck twice when reeling in. I was able to un-stuck it by lower the tip of the rod and wait ...

TP Halibut 11/5/23
I was up early because of the time change. I checked the cams on Surfline and Torrey Pines looked very inviting. I fished the south of the side lagoon entrance around Tower 4. I read the beach and found a channel that was leading out from the shore. Around the channel there was a nice drop off and ...

Morro Bay - Cayucos
Hello,
Curious if anybody had fished in the Morro bay to cayucos area from shore and had any luck. Will be working there 2 times a year and wanted to get some fishing in. No specific target species just looking for some fun. Thanks

Re: Morro Bay - Cayucos
I fish in the area when visiting family. I haven’t fished Morro but fish pismo a bunch. Tons of perch. There’s a guy on YouTube that fishes halibut from the surf and does well. No one really does it up there. The guy fishes shell and avala beach. Just south of morro. This guy fishes the areas you ...

Thanksgiving is about being grateful
...and I certainly am. Seaweed was heavy but I was able to find a spot that is more or less clean, at least for a while, long enough to land this beauty.
Also got decent sized (> 12 in) cabezon and kelpfish.

Re: How big do surf perch get?
the big "slabs" can get up to 14 - 15" range at So. Cal beaches. A few may push close to 16. PB for me in San Diego was 14"+. Suggest you check out Nick Heid's site, www.surffishingsocalsd.com and Bill Varney's www.fishthe surf.com. Both have excellent info on perch fishing So.Cal's beaches.
I ...

Re: How big do surf perch get?
!6 inch for me , let the big girl go . For winter / late fall perch swap over to a different bait . Green rock crabs make up a large portion of the forage for perch . I know don't put it on the web but is true . The hassle of getting the right bait is worth it . Not many willing to travel for couple ...

Last Minute Trip With Grandon And His Buddy
Grandson called me Friday night and asked If I'd like to do a little surf fishing with him and his buddy... His buddy is a fisherman but hadn't surf fished since he was younger... My Grandson supplied all of the gear for him to use... We decided on fishing the inside and outside of Alamitos ...
