Fishing with dad

My father will be 99 years old this Sept, the pier is about all he can handle anymore. None the less, the other day he hung a 21 1/2" grump. Quick pic and released, gonna take him out on the boat tomorrow. Didn't mean to cut his head off :D

Spotfin on the fly

PXL_20240623_140617951.jpg
My first spotfin! Red krabbypatty fly at Blacks, 7:00AM, -1ft tide. Kelp was a nuisance and got worse as the tide came in. I did not see any corbina.

Re: Straight braid or leader for lucky crafts/jerkbaits

There’s a lot of alternatives to LC. - cheaper and more expensive. LC work 100% but so do others. LC is a very well made lure though. There was another lure from Japan that I absolutely loved but it’s impossible to find. (Haven’t looked recently) the model was surf driver by “duo” I think??? In blue ...

San Clemente SB 7/21

This beach can be tough to fish with any kind of swell, and yesterday was enough to make it a little difficult. The water seemed cooler and there was some salad in it to add too the work.. Anyway it was fun fishing with my Grandson again, and he out fished me with 4- BSP and a 15” corbina… I beat ...

San Clemente 7/24 (Late)

Not much better luck, with 1-small BSP to show… Conditions gradually improving, except for a pretty stiff breeze out of the North, but fishing, not so much…

Fishing report - Pacific Beach Wednesday 8/7/24

Fished the surf at PB this morning south of Crystal Pier. Sand crabs were plentiful. Grass and kelp have improved, not near as heavy as the past several days. Bite was sporadic, but landed 14 total in 2.5 hours, 11 BSP, 1 SNGF, 1 bean, 1 YFC (was yummy in fish tacos for lunch).

Just an FYI for ...

Fishing report - Pacific Beach Thursday 8/8/24

Plenty of crabs and wave action letting up a little. Low tide not as low as past days, the hole/gut I worked all week didn’t show as well this morning. Slow bite. Only managed 3 BSP in 1.75 hours. Saw and sight casted for multiple large corbina in ankle deep water over crab beds without luck. Water ...

Pacific Beach 8/13/24

Fished the surf south of Crystal pier 7:30-8:30 this morning. Bite was hot first 30 minutes while the marine layer was there, then turned off when the sun came out, maybe coincidence. Caught 1 small corbina and 5 BSP. Grass and kelp were heavy up near shore but manageable with a short cast out. Saw ...

Re: Pacific Beach Thursday morning 8/15/24

@PerchKiller - I was just north of you, somewhere between the lifeguard station and probably Reed Ave. I’m sorta guessing it’s around Reed that there’s been another hole now and then. I was there sometime before 7am but only for 15-20 minutes.

Re: Pier fishing info

You can go to Walmart for $15 rod/reel combo. Good enough for pier fishing. You can also get sabiki rigs there as well, and get a pack of sinkers.
It would cost you at least that much to rent a combo from pier.
Use them for a couple days, then drop them off at Goodwill before leaving. All good. You ...

North County bite turned on

Croaker on gulp worms and probably 6 perch as well. Nothing too great size wise but fun nonetheless.

Re: Torrance Beach SNGF

What # test line ? They're tough dudes, don't seem to tire out. Had a big one like that last year snap me off on 10# test.

I used straight, 8lb Sufix Tritanium, with a Tranx 200XG and a 10'6" Loomis STR1263C. My small, Caivo Nanowire #10 hook got him perfectly in the jaw and my buddy grabbed ...

Re: Surf Barracuda - Labor Day 2024

Assume you knew not a hali peeling your line ! Great catch & congrats !

Thanks yes a novelty and very memorable event! It was almost dark, fish was pulling pretty hard at times. I was thinking a big calico. But I had no idea what it was until it was laying on the wet sand. Even then, it took me ...

Pacific Beach Monday Sept 30

I fished south of Crystal pier about 8-10:30 this morning. Set waves are a little stronger than over the weekend, starting to churn up grass chunks and tie interesting knots in leaders. Grass level ranged from none to slightly annoying. Sand crabs plentiful under the pier. Bite was generally slow ...

Pacific Beach Monday Oct 7

I fished the surf south of Crystal Pier from about 8-10am this morning. Water still cold, 64ish. Wave action down some from the weekend. Grass was light, not a problem. Sand crabs getting scarce except under pier, and sand crabs are generally getting smaller in size. Current pulled south to north so ...

Pacific Beach Tuesday Oct 8

I fished the surf south of Crystal pier from about 7-9am this morning. Wave action was much lighter this morning. Grass and kelp remains minimal. Caught 4 BSP, a couple good sized around 10-11 inches.

The fish had a strong preference for soft shells today. It’s common for me to get a hit, then ...
