Mission Bay - stingray blues

Post by Rattus »

Mission Bay DAC has treated me well this year…until December. Now nothing but stingrays, and I hate stingrays! I hate everything about them: how they look, how they get foul hooked, how big ones break me off so I lose flies and lures, and of course their stinger. I’d probably hate how they taste but thankfully can say I’ve never tried.

When they’re in high numbers, do they tend to push other species away?

Well that question seems to have no answers and leads to a bunch more questions. I imagine they simply out number and out compete everything to a degree because not much eats them or is big enough these days. Stingray populations have been rising according to this:

Interesting article. I read somewhere sharks eat stingrays (I’m guessing their stingers or other parts are found in the shark’s stomach), yet no one has actually observed or recorded a shark eating a stingray.

Edit: As bendo and blackcloud9 posted below, sharks certainly have been observed eating stingrays.

I have seen Juvenile White Sharks feeding on Stingrays in Bolsa Chica. This happened last Spring and after calling people over, a large crowd developed. It was a full on Nat Geo moment.

Well, I was clearly wrong about that. That's a cool video!
