5/2 San Diego Bay

Slow day for me with only landing one spotty at Spanish landing. Haven’t fished the bay since I was a kid and it feels like learning all over again. From the shore with a big hammer in my old favorite Redrum 3” which I guess they stopped making it seems.

Hodges May 19th

Quick morning session on the float tube at Hodges on Sunday. Ended up with five on the drop shot close to shore. Three of them in the same spot within minutes of each other which was nice after two hours of no bites. I’m guessing they were on spawning beds there, also indicated from their tails ...

Variety at Tidelands Park

Floated Tidelands Park this morning from 6:00-9:00 with a steady bite the whole time. Drop shot robo worms on a 6lb ultra light trout setup was all I ended up using. Handful of spotties, yellow fin croaker, a halibut and a chunky Sargo.

Re: Variety at Tidelands Park

I usually fish soft plastics on a jig head and that is more effective on spotties than the drop shot in my experience. But I might try the drop shot with a Gulp bait next time to get the variety.

I’ve been trying out new techniques lately for the bay after almost exclusively using swimbaits on ...

Hodges July 31st

Not much to report from this mornings trip to Hodges. Landed a 2lber on a crankbait right off the bat around 5:30. A couple missed bites over the next hours but that was all. Called it a day at 9:00 when the sun came out.

Carlsbad Lagoon Sunset Spotty Extravaganza

Packed the float tube and my new ghost shrimp pump and headed to Carlsbad lagoon for the first time.

Forgot to glue the handle on the pump, so there goes that plan.

Launched the tube at 6:30, it was very slow until sunset, then it was wide open until 8:30.A small ned rig Zman trd tossed in the eel ...

Re: Reality Check - Hodges 8/24

I was out there on a tube as well from 6:00-9:30 with only three bass for the day. All on a drop shot fluke dragged on the bottom as if fishing the bay for spotties. I launched out of Hernandez and fished that side of the peninsula. Water was chocolate milk and absolutely full of carp on the muddy ...

Re: Hodges 8/25

Glad you were able to find some fish, Hodges has been tougher than tough this month.

Miramar

Went to Miramar for a couple hours this afternoon after reading some reports here. A few fish busting on shad here and there but weren’t interested in anything I threw at them. Landed one on a small jerk bait near some tules. This fish fought like one twice his size which was fun. Might head out ...

Re: Miramar

Have been back a couple times since I posted. Have been able to get quite a few by just throwing kastmasters and spoons, letting them sink a ways before retrieving. Vertical jigging the spoons works pretty well too. The fish seem to hanging out about 30 feet down in the main part of the lake (I don ...

Tidelands Park, slow, very slow

Launched the float tube at 6:30am out of tidelands with the plan to fish the moored boats. This spot has always held some biters until today. Two hours went by and nothing, not a bite.

Moved out to deeper water closer to the channel which is a bit uneasy in a float tube. Right off the bat in 35ft ...

Re: 9/24- Miramar

The bite at Miramar really went from 100 to 0 over the past few weeks. Last month you could toss any sort of spoon and get bit anywhere in the lake

Great morning at tidelands

Showed up to tidelands at 5:30 am to find a flock of pelicans diving on bait fish just off the shore. Quickly launched the tube and was quickly rewarded. Bonito! Threw crankbaits and jerk baits for a total of 12 bass and 6 bonito. Great fight on a 6lb trout set up. All fish were caught in less than ...

Re: Great morning at tidelands

Nice. We fished that area today. No bones but steady action all morning on the bass.

The bonito were actively feeding on bait balls just a few yards off the beach until about 7:30 am. I think I was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time. Never seen a bait ball getting attacked ...

Bite at Murray was slower this morning but still there. The larger bass are stuffed to the gills with shad.

Re: Cold affecting bite in bays

I’ve noticed the bass have started to be more aggressive towards reaction type baits as everything cools down which sounds backwards. Spinner baits and crank baits are getting a lot of attention. Last week I caught more on a spinner bait than the ghost shrimp I brought!
