12/1-Lake Miramar update

Right before they closed Lake Miramar to all watercraft months ago, I had some really fun fishing trips.
Bass were on the chew on the handful of trips I made and only wished I fished earlier up there before they closed in September. In fact I had my most productive bass fishing day this year ...

Re: 12/1-Lake Miramar update

Sadly, the way the city works, I have to wonder IF we will be allowed back on the water at all? 🫤
I think they will allow it, but that's not what concerns me. I'm concerned that:

1) The project will take much, much longer than expected, dragging out the "no watercraft" situation for what seems ...

Re: 12/1-Lake Miramar update

The good news is Bass are tough. I mean they survive just fine in the sewage that is the SD River. I know of a population of Bass that live in a Golf Pond that is no more than 3 feet deep and dyed green. It is filled with “reclaimed” water out of the Purple Pipes. They also survive in the Santa Ana ...

FISHERIES INVENTORY AND UTILIZATION OF SAN DIEGO BAY, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA FOR SURVEYS CONDUCTED IN APRIL AND JULY 2022

Vantuna Research Group published their 2022 survey a few months back. You can read the 82-page report here. They conduct this trawl and seine survey twice a year, every few years, so it's interesting to see the seasonal differences within a year, as well as trends over time. Additionally, they ...

Re: The Bay - Mix Bag

If I may ask, is there a strategy to maximize the number of species caught or is it pretty random?

All random pretty much. We did not do anything different. Just tossing out 4in jigs with a slow retrieve or drift. But it does seem like different location hold different species. Like we always ...

Re: Spotty Fishing San Diego Bay- A-rig and Ultralight

Cool video, cool rod, nice fish! I haven’t had much luck with spotties during slack tides.

I have had days where I absolutely nailed them at low tide in the channels next to flats using a crankbait, outside the weedline.

Have yet to find that I do any better on an Alabama rig than on a single ...

Thanks, I'll have to try that. Do they move from the flats into the deeper channels at low tide? Have you had success fishing at high tide?

Yes, they won't stay ...

Re: Spotty Fishing San Diego Bay- A-rig and Ultralight

This time of year (not winter during the grass die off), the channels are usually free of much grass that hangs up on the lures.

Speaking of which, where do the bass go during the winter when the water cools and the grass dies off?

South Bay turns on then, I have had some amazing days there ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUeT8eabaLE
Hey all I hope the holiday season is treating you right. I headed out to the big bay for some fishing and had not been out there in a while. I met up with some people that said the fishing was slow but picking up. Launched the tube from Tidelands Park ...

Mission Bay 12/22

Fished the back of mission bay, afternoon outgoing tide. Was joping to get on a crankbait bite but they werent into it. Switched to the trusty weedless fluke and the bite was on. Loads of bait in clearish water. Nothing big but fun on light line.

PB Mullet on a swimbait, SD River channel 12/27

Ran out to the MB jetty to make a few casts and ended with a few species mostly all on the weedless 4" white slim swimmer. Caught my first mullet ever, just after dark, thought maybe it was a baby corvina or a bonefish at first.

Macks were rolling through the jetty channel, and a couple baby ...

Re: Mission Bay 12/22

Nice balance on a SUP!
Speaking of which, do you SUP guys use your normal hook set or modify it to keep from losing balance?

A lot of guys sit down to not lose balance. I dont really have that problem, when in san diego, the fish aren't big enough to need to really set the hook that hard ...

Re: Cesar Chavez Park launch

Last time I looked there in person there was a fence separating the grass from the mud beach. Boats and barges almost completely blocked the space between Pier 18 and Pier 19 (the Cesar Chavez public pier - no fishing allowed). Even if you could access the water the work going on would have made ...

Feel for the Winter,

]But dont have a cold heart.

Took a break from lmb and tried a couple bay trips.

Sometimes fishing sucks, sometimes it doesn't. Recently got into a wfo spotty bite and hammered it for 3 hours. Never went more than a couple minutes without a bendo. Pretty much got bit every other cast on the yo ...

Son’s First Halibut in Mission Bay 1/13

Rented a skiff to bond with my son. Didn’t have hi expectations especially since we are beginners. Was about to call it a day and he snagged a legal halibut on live sardine. He was so pumped and now is addicted.

Curse of the First Cast Fish!

The curse is real!! Decided to hit the small bay for a change. It’s right down the hill from my place but we almost always hit the big bay. Anyway the morning was chillier and breezier than forecast but we were determined to learn. Had new tactics ready to go and first cast…bam! Truly thought about ...
