Lagoon Opaleye on the Artificial
Headed up to Carlsbad area to have a look around lagoons at low tide during the last grunion run.
Not much luck on the halibut, a few mixed bag little critters on various fave plastics and the opaleye ate a MORF perch grub bounced on the bottom. Some aggressive little fish in the lagoon ...

Santee Lakes Bluegill Blossoming
Lately I have been visiting Santee Lakes and catching bass, but also watching the newly hatched bluegill grow from one inch to more than three inches. They always seem to be feeding on heavy concentrations of freshwater plankton and also on hatching bugs in the heat of the day. They are usually ...

San Vicente Lake Record Redear 4.2 lbs Released
I got super lucky this afternoon at San V. After catching a bunch of bass on dropshots, I decided to target a few panfish laate in the day based on my meter readings and WHAMO, blessed with a tanker panfish, a 4.2 lb. redear.
She was caught on 2 lb line and a piece of nightcrawler, 18 feet deep on ...

Re: San Vicente Lake Record Redear 4.2 lbs Released
Holy shit, that is a fucking monster. Unfortunately it probably died but damn! You weren't fishing for bass with a 2lb setup on hand.
OK, but I caught eight bass, and one panfish. Yes its possible that she swam off strong and then died. The stringer is through the lip, not the gills and nothing ...

Congratulations. You are a serious angler and deserve it.
I'm honored, as you are truly the panfish master! Your experience, knowledge and information sharing over the years is inspirational to many in the panfish community.
I hope that we'll all be surprised at the size of fish caught this ...

San Vicente Kayak Panfish May 19
My second trip to San V this year, and found the bluegill and redear biting pretty good in the late afternoon. Even some lowly bass.
Dropshotting half a crawler gets it done. All fish were released.

Re: San Vicente Kayak Panfish May 19
Consider time of day. I can get the bass to bite all day long but 5 pm can be a light-switch factor for these bluegill/redear.Pourboy wrote: Sat May 20, 2023 9:07 am Great job again! I'm heading out there tomorrow for those. I could not find them last week. Hopefully better luck tomorrow. Thanks for the update!

Agree, Friday late afternoon was a ghost town at the ramp. Weekends of course are a whole different story.
Here is a shot of the busy launch ramp last Sunday at 1 pm, A WHILE BEFORE I LAUNCHED:

Fat Bluegill, San Vicente ... again? May 21
It's officially a pattern at this point! :D
Really fun panfishing again today and upped gear to 6 lb. braid with 6 lb. leader, found the fish in the same areas. Targeting around 15 to 18 feet deep on nightcrawlers at the outer edge of the brushlines, similar to Friday's catch but added a fat 2.2 ...

Rocky Shorelines - Calico Bass May 22
Walked down to a favorite beach spot to fish a weighted weedless swimbait (shown) along the sand/rock shoreline here, with much smaller surf today.
The recent south swells have migrated tons of sand north on my beach, and have unburied the local acres of eel grass - which is all dead and drifting ...

Re: Rocky Shorelines - Calico Bass May 22
This was really helpful, thanks for the info on how all that eel grass washes up this time of year.
Did your weedless rig in the photos manage to cut through it pretty well (besides the obvious success), or do you just move around until you find a relatively clean patch?
The main reason I use ...

Re: Rocky Shorelines - Calico Bass May 22
The smaller bullet type (1/0) hook has a fixed weight at the eye like a sled head. I use those for the slimmer profile baits and when there is no wind. Total weight 1/8 oz.
The bigger profile rig uses a combo of a slip bullet weight and the Gamakatsu (3/0) weighted hook. The slip weight I use ...

Panfish Parade, San Vicente Memorial Day Weekend
After getting stuff done at home, I ditched the beach gloom for beautiful San Vicente and fished on both Sunday and Monday afternoons in the kayak. Overcast weather with slight breeze. This is trip 4 and 5 to SanV following the same panfish pattern. Its a slam dunk to take the kayak with the ...
