Re: Panfish Parade, San Vicente Memorial Day Weekend
Thanks! Yes and I wonder if there are any 'purebreds' left in there. I highly doubt the people that keep the lake records(?) could properly judge one way or the other on species.foulhook wrote: Wed May 31, 2023 5:52 am Nice panfishing, I still have a hard time telling the difference between big bluegill and redear

Re: Hodges Crappies
Sure was great to see you and the kids getting in on the fun crappie action. Even saw you guys with a couple double-hookups! That day I released more than a dozen, caught a whole bunch more and kept nine better ones for dinner.

Lake Hodges Kayaking June 2023
My report over the last couple of Sundays at Lake Hodges fishing for crappie - it's been nothing short of spectacular from the kayak with the ultralight gear. I see a lot of guys bringing home limits(25) but, I end up releasing most of my fish and keeping a handful of the nicer models for various ...

Re: Lake Hodges Kayaking June 2023
Way to go, those are some beautiful fish.
With those new electronics there's no slowing you down.,
LOL, making up for three skunk days from shore at Sweetwater earlier this year in addition to two full days kayaking at Sutherland where I only caught one crappie each day! 2023 Dues are paid in ...

Peaceful Kayak Crappie Fishing Day
Continued my quest for improving my kayak crappie techniques on Father's Day with a very lazy 'gentlemans hours' kayak launch at 10:30 am. Weather was bright sunny and the water temp pushing 74.
The deeper side of the lake in the deeper channel areas seemed to be the ticket for finding them. Used ...

Re: Peaceful Kayak Crappie Fishing Day
Got home, made five casts from my local beach, and caught two halibut and a calico bass.
Great catch @blackcloud9 ! Would you mind sharing some of that expertise? Every time I go to my local beach (Torrey Pines) I end up empty handed. I almost feel like it's a curse of some sort :eyes_on_fire ...

Re: Mission Bay 7/2
Oooh damn I'm not one to question a mans fishing areas or style but why of all the days did you choose today to test out a new rig? I know the urge to fish but F the bay fishing, go to a lake first especially these next few days
There are very few options for using an SUP on lakes in San Diego ...

Calico Bass along the reefs
Very steady beach fishing in late June. Tallied 30+ calicos, 8 short white seabass to about 22", and 2 legal halibut - all gently released except the halibut. Saw some relative beginners get a legal halibut yesterday from the rocks throwing a swimbait. :D

Re: Calico Bass along the reefs
That’s a great month of fishing. Do you fish there daily?
Daily but during the right conditions, swells, wind, tides, moon - there are about 10 worthwhile evenings out of each month marked on my calendar. That is 2 five-day runs, coinciding with moon phases but some months have very few fishable ...

Re: Calico Bass along the reefs
Nice Corvina there! Too bad they could not get it recorded.
Well, I'm at fault for not getting the fish officially weighed. But made really good ceviche ;) . There are lots of big ones around right now - note that article was regarding July 4th, 2022 . Snorkeling the other day I saw a giant ...

Just an FYI report on the squid thread.

Re: Favorite fish finder and size on kayak
Looks like in general, I should just keep the sample size one, as it does do the basics well. Thanks for the help and saving me money.
Sure! You may stick to your trusty one dimensional unit, similar to the Humminbirds and Lowrance units I've been using for decades of successful fishing. Those ...

Re: Favorite fish finder and size on kayak
Thanks for the nice write up. You pretty much nailed what I was thinking about with the fishfinder. I'm happy that you use the 7" unit. That was my biggest concern was getting some large screen and then impacting my movement in the kayak. I'll probably match your setup. Next I have to design my ...

Re: Mission Bay 7/2
Circling back to this, I got clarity from San Diego Resovior and Lakes Program Manager, and despite the SUP-like appearance, so long as you're sitting down and using a traditional kayak paddle, it meets the regulatory definition as a kayak and is allowed on any county lake which allows both kayaks ...

Re: Rock Fish for Beginners
Any of the good spots can go from "dead" to "wide open" very quickly (or vice versa) as the current changes. I use circle hooks 5/0 and above to help avoid killing the babies. Descending device or similar setup to help rescue little ones.
