2/5-Mixing it up Deep at Murray

Post by VinnyBass »

"Blades, Ice Jigs & Spoons..oh my!" was the theme today at Murray. Decided to give it a go after some inspiration by yesterdays post by Dannicus. Fumbling around at home I did not get on the water till around 8:45.I tossed a few swim baits near the ramp and shoreline but it already started to warm up so I ventured out into deeper water. Lots of
vertical jigging and casts and finally hooked my first bass on a blade at around 10:40. Then a little while later, I picked up a few more bass on blades. I then started alternating baits between ice jigs, spoons, a graph shad and heavier bladed baits.
I was pretty lucky as the bass seemed to like the variety. Despite 3 bass coming unbuttoned on jumps near my boat, I was able to land 12 bass (without one micro bass..yay!),all out in deep water. (What's funny was I was stuck on 11 bass and then lost one. I wanted that 12th bass so I stubbornly stayed out there for another 35 minutes to pick up my 12 fish
on a spoon). It was a late morning bite and glad I did not take off early and hope this is a good sign for better fishing days to come for all of us. Tight lines. :-)

Just for laughs, for @Mcfish.. my 12th bass...not
big, but could not leave without him..ha ha

The dreaded ice jig..good job! Seems like they're either the killer bait, or a skunk finder! They're either on or they're totally off....I knew you would find the deep bite soon!

Yep, the old ice jig. A winter tradition.
The blade baits actually had a little more action.
I picked up that Z-Man Graph Shad at the BPS because it looked cool and I caught one and lost one on it, but can't wait to toss it in the middle of busting bass this summer.

Yeah one of the reasons I have kinda avoided fishing deep is the whole fizzing thing. I have read about how to do it, but the idea kinda freaks me out a bit. I didn't have as good of a day as Vinny yesterday, but I did find a few chunkers hanging out between 15 and 20 feet.

Amazing job as always Vin!

Sorry for the southern accent explanation, but I found this video and this is the way I fizz a bass.
I found this easier for me, and It is really not that hard

I have one of these in my boat and in my kayak

Thanks for the video Vinny, that was a pretty good explanation. Now I just need to start catching fish again. :)

I've got a collection of them stuck all over the wrecks and tires at Perris. I have a love hate relationship with those things.

Weren’t ice jigs prohibited at Murray for all except a priveledged set of young anglers that Dannicus ratted out? Or was it the front facing sonar we aren’t supposed to use there? I’m so confused 🙄

Not sure about the ice jigs being prohibited at Lake Murray, but did see this sign recently.

If you banned ice jigs and FFS at Murray, Vinnybass would be stuck fishing Chollas and Lindo Lake.....

I can't shake the image of Vinny sitting on his Ranger in the middle of Lindo lake staring at his FFS vertical jigging for bullheads and sunfish.

Don't need my boat to catch fish.......my small, no electronics, no thrills kayak would be fine...ha ha
McFish usually uses niblets corn, but he usually is fishing for carp.
In fact I found a file photo when he was sponsored by Niblets Corn fishing at San V.

At what depth do you need to fizz a bass? I don't livewell them and always release after i catch. Havent ever seen any go belly up even the ones i mark at 45ft-50ft. Im all about respecting our resource btw. I dont even net or flip bass to preserve their slime coat. I lip them unhook and release.
