Barrett Lake Pattern
The pattern on 5/10 was moss everywhere. Even 20' down, there's moss. Moss on stickups, moss on rocks, free floating moss, everywhere except far from shore. Lots of algae in the water too, maybe 2-3' visibility. Saw big long stringers of moss on the depth finder, almost like a forest down there in spots.
Best baits to get thru the moss were a Texas rigged weightless Senko and a dropshot with about an 18" distance to the sinker. A cylindrical sinker with a line tie (instead of a pinch) picked up the least grass. The Senko produced in even 20' of water, just takes a long time to get down, especially with the wind moving the float tube around. Adding a weight seemed to reduce the effectiveness and pick up more grass. Wound up with 26 bass and 1 crappie from the float tube, on the lake all day, fished from Pigs Point into Hauser arm. Slower than expected.

Our day pretty much matched yours. Flylined senkos and T-rigged worms deeper kept us somewhat away from the gooGotfish? wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 6:22 am The pattern on 5/10 was moss everywhere. I’ll bring extra tissues, if not for the aquatic snot, to dry my tears if it’s still a slow dinkfest for me on Wednesday… haha

Even the dinks yesterday put up a hell of a fight. They looked and seemed healthier than last year. I keep meaning to get on a bluegill bite, but never end up actually committing to try and find them haha. I’ll dropshot some small plastics and should hopefully run into some on Wednesday. I’ve got some light jigheads to throw too…Spektrum wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 10:29 amEven the dinks yesterday put up a hell of a fight. They looked and seemed healthier than last year. Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
Was using small EWG’s like size 2 and 4 with zoom tiny flukes. The hookup ratio was pretty terrible, but any exposed hook resulted in catching a whole bunch of snot.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 10:31 amI keep meaning to get on a bluegill bite, but never end up actually committing to try and find them haha. Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
Next time I go out to Barrett, I intend to try a Texas rigged Senko but with a tail weight so it swims away from the angler when falling. This should also keep the hook eye out of the moss so it catches less of that stuff. If a shorter, more buoyant bait is used, this is termed a Tiny Child rig (might try that too). I generally put a swivel about a foot above the bait, that catches some of the moss.
Moss is a challenge. The bass clearly like to hang out in it but it is a mess to fish. Topwaters and subsurface baits just don't work as well as getting deep in the slop.
More ideas are definitely welcome.

Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
I’ve been throwing the Neko a lot lately, so I’ll have to mess around with throwing the nail weight in the bottom of a senko like you mentioned. I’ve also got some small EWG’s designed for neko rigging I’ll have to try out.Gotfish? wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 11:45 am Next time I go out to Barrett, I intend to try a Texas rigged Senko but with a tail weight so it swims away from the angler when falling. The real Fisherman’s decision here would be for me to take this as a reason to buy some fat Ika’s instead of using what I already have on hand…

Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
If you want a Texas rigged Senko to fall away from you, then put a small straight nail weight about 1/4 the way from the end of the worm. Putting it at the very end seems to result in the Senko falling vertically. You will have to experiment to get it just right. The Senko will be more moss resistant than the Ika.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 12:09 pmI’ve been throwing the Neko a lot lately, so I’ll have to mess around with throwing the nail weight in the bottom of a senko like you mentioned. Try hooking the senko in the tail end, it grabs less snot and still works great for me.Gotfish? wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 11:45 am Next time I go out to Barrett, I intend to try a Texas rigged Senko but with a tail weight so it swims away from the angler when falling. No such thing as weightless Texas rig. The bullet weight along with weedless hooking is what makes it Texas.Gotfish? wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 6:22 am The pattern on 5/10 was moss everywhere. Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
Enough people write something online even without knowing what they are talking about…of course AI will have something to say…scientifically there no such thing as more than two genders but if you google it, of course google will tell you there is. Texas rig is Texas rig.
It’s like saying I’m going to have a coneless Ice cream cone.
No weight is fly lined, weightless or wacky.

Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
Or like saying a boneless chicken thigh. Doesn't seem to bother most people.
A fly lined or weightless Senko could be with a nose hook, exposed hook or hook with a weed guard instead. A Texas rig implies the barb is buried in the plastic. I don't think many people are confused by "weightless Texas rig" just like most people are not confused by "boneless chicken thighs".

Re: Barrett Lake Pattern
Maybe you can coin splitshot Texas rig or Carolina Texas rig since you say it’s all about the hook.

Anyone besides camo wound up about this? Any other travesties such as boneless ribs, jumbo shrimp, meatless sausage, kids chasing balls onto your grass, etcetera?
