Help, mullet advice needed!

Post by Gotfish? »

And I don't mean ugly haircuts. I would like to catch mullet on lures. I got some panfish size Ned rigs to try on spinning gear and thought I would try my luck at Bayside on Saturday 1st thing in the AM and thru the tide swing but am open to better ideas. I have BFS and baitcasting tackle as well, 4-10 lb test. I will be fishing from my float tube. Where would you recommend and what lure to use?

They stack up in the SDR by the YMCA and I've had small ones aggressively attack and nip at the ends of a pink San Juan worm fly, but not commit. Other than that, I've only seen them filter feed. So I'd suggest the smallest, thinnest, wiggliest plastic you can throw.

The only time I have ever caught mullet was with a squid tentacle and I think a size 8 mosquito hook.

I did not see any mullet today at Bayside. Picked up a couple of spotties on the panfish Ned rig, the regular sized Ned rig was much more productive though. Ended up with 21 spotted bay bass. Still have the goal of catching mullet on a lure.

The only time I've seen mullet feeding was when they ate floating green weeds (not grass)....and nowhere near the bottom. I have never caught one on a lure (although one tore the skirt off my swimbait once).

Maybe a long wispy green ly?

I have caught a couple on bait in a creek....this one was caught by a friend, four miles from the coast....

The answer to your problem is a flight to New Orleans and a rental car drive to Venice. There, the Mullet are voracious and eat anything thrown onto the water. Put them in a bucket and bring them back so we can have that here…
