For halibut, I would recommend a rig that gets the bait off the bottom more so they can see it from a longer distance, either a dropshot rig or a 3 way swivel rig. Dropshot for anchovies, 3 way swivel for mackerel and smelt. You could also use a dropper loop for the bait hook instead of a dropshot ...

I think (don't know for sure) it doesn't have a decent oxygen supply and is essentially unmaintained, so the water doesn't get replenished often, resulting in regular die-offs. The last time I saw it was choked with vegetation and algae. I'm not sure I would eat anything out of it.

Any chance you know what the big project will be? Have not been to Lake Mira Mar in so long.


I do not know all the details but it is a huge underwater pipeline construction project that they say will be completed in 2025.
We will see and hope the fish like the new water that will be entering ...

What bugs do you like for tageting bluegill? I imagine just about anything would work. I was thinking of doing it just to keep my long-rod game sharp so I'm not rusty at the beginning of each Sierra trip.

Pretty sure cuyamaca still has a refund program if you pull carp out of the water and bring them up to the concession, they will refund your permit price. They are pretty thick in the shallows.

went out before work to try my luck for a bit. Got a mack on first cast with jig. Cut it up and baited it on another rod. Got a personal PB guitar fish. Was a good morning workout to start the day. Got a few others but nothing else too exciting.

The biggest fish I caught from the surf was from North Torrey Pines right in front of the parking lot.

Here’s one from that water and in the big horn tube many years back
