I caught a large corbina quite a few years back, thaht had a perfectly round bite taken out of it’s side.. I made a comment to a couple of guys I was fishing with, that it looked like a cookie cutter shark bite, but I didn’t think they made it to CA…. When I got home I found out that they do show up on warmer years… A really weird and scary critter…

Went this morning from 6:30 - 9:00. Caught 1 YFC (11.5”) on an LC just before 7 am. From 7 to 7:30 nothing. Switched from LC to gulps, caught 3 perch. Including a feisty lil dude about 3.5” on a size 2 hook. Sand crabs were scarce. Put 1 sand crab on the hook with a small chewed piece of gulp to look like eggs. As soon as that hit the water it was gone, nice hit, failed to set hook. Switched back to LC caught 1 more perch just over 9”

I went to Carlsbad between the 2 outlets from Agua Hedionda Lagoon. 80% of my casts came back with seaweed on them. I caught one BSP on a white and silver paddle tail grub. No one else caught anything that I saw. Some guys made a few casts and just left.

Same experience I had a bit further south. I’ll post my Mission Beach weekend recap tomorrow, because my arms are still on fire from the giant balls of grass that were coming in on nearly every cast.

This morning was as calm in mid-Del Mar as I have seen it since June. Not much grass in the water until high tide, but I was leaving then anyway. Kept thinking I should throw the LC, but didn't. I found enough crabs to fish for a few hours, supplemented with a little market shrimp and another test run of fish bites. Perch cooperated pretty steadily on all three, but I still doubt the catch rate of fishbites compared to crabs and shrimp, even for perch, though not with certainty. Perch bit all the way to high tide and bit closer and closer as the tide hit the steeper sand. The only other fish for me were a couple of baby leos. Another regular caught a YFC. It was a beautiful morning; summer is fading fast now—time to take out the warmer clothes.

Indeed. My sweatshirts have made their way out of storage bins, and it’s raining as I type this.

Thanks for the report, sounds like you had a nice day! I’ve used the sand crab fishbites and my experiences with those mirror what you mentioned. They work. They don’t seem to work as good as actual sand crabs but I’ve caught fish with them. I haven’t had a session with good enough conditions to form any sort of option on the fishbites bloodworms.

In a half hour at guard tower 36 in Carlsbad I caught a surf perch and my first corbina on a brown paddle tail grub. This was a receding low tide. I used a hybrid Carolina/Texas rig with the Carolina rig setup and the hook Texas style. It made it through the large quantity of vegetation.

Congrats on the 1st corbina… Many more to come, I’m sure.. Way to think outside the box…

Well I came out to Carlsbad thinking it’s time to accept some skunks die to switching to artificials . I found a good list on king hole but tons of seaweed . Nothing else looked promising. Definitely with Bob74 in mind i t-rigged a little grub on the c-rig and got some bumps them 1 small perch …first barred surf perch ever on a lure . There will be more ..skunks are going to be part of it .
It’s gonna be a challenge !

Unfortunately, skunks are always part of it. I'm a creature of habit and tend not to experiment to much, but without trying different things you'll never know what works.. Challenge is good...

I used to just hook the grub on a cheap regular j hook. Then, over the last month, there has been so much vegetation, I switched to doing the hook Texas style. The smallest worm hooks are too big for most perch grubs. There is a company called invinci core that makes small worm hooks but I have not bought any. I have switched to a larger paddle tail grub so that the worm hooks I have can fit.

Nice to see a Jamul resident. There used to be fishing holes all over Jamul 40+ years ago. Bass and bluegill. Lots of fun. Now they are dried up.

O.k. It's done, took the first of probably several skunks at Del Mar—a few bumps on the grub, which I could fish open hook no problem. A few bumps on a 2" fake blood worm. Surf was 4' high/high-slack tide churned up in the middle of the day.

I hear you. I was out this morning from 7 to 9:30 farther up the coast. From 7 to 8:30 nothing, no even a bump. 8:30 to 9:15 only 2 perch, both about 5”.

It was good medicine! I am going to enjoy these skunks! It's the only path to a keeper halibut, at least at the beaches I love.
