Eastern Sierra fun!

Post by Mcfish »

Just got back from 10 days in the Mammoth area. I've been fishing the area for 65 years, so I feel right at home up there! This time of year I mostly fish Crowley, Mary, George, and Mamie. Crowley was fishing great, midging was the ticket..pulling streamers wasn't as reliable. I picked up 12-14 fish each day I fished it and probably missed 10 or so grabs each day. Mary was also fishing great, streamers with hares ear or pheasant tail trailers was the ticket! Fish were deeper this year, just off the dropouts. I love my fall trips up there...the crowds are gone and the weather is perfect!

I just got back from a whole week at Big Pine Creek. You are spot on about fall being the best time! There were maybe 6 people in the campground the whole time. No shortage of browns willing to bite. No fly fishing for me, but my coworker just gave me a rod and reel so I need to start practicing. It's amazing what The Sierras do for your mental health. No cell service, no agenda, fish when you want, relax when you want. Heaven on Earth.

Great outing, Mcfish. I always look forward to your Fall reports from the Eastside. I'll be heading up this weekend for a quick trip, but I'll be flinging flies on some of the moving waters in the area. One of these years I've got to take my tube and hit the lakes.

Thanks for sharing.

I normally fish the moving waters in the spring, some of the stream levels get a little sketchy in the fall. I wanted to fish the San Joaquin but they're still working on the road down to it..
