I missed a bass on a fluke as it surprised the heck out of me when it hit the fluke right before I lifted it out of the water. The splash of water even landed on my glasses...ha ha Anyway worked a few baits and then tied on a Brushhog. I was working it in and then my line started heading out to deeper water so I quickly set the hook. This bass put on a show as it jumped out of the water severaltimes and finally landed it and it went 4lbs. I just wish I had a video of all the jumps. Worked a few more baits as I knew I would not be staying that long and then felt a little light tap on my senko. I thought maybe a small bluegill hit it as the line did not move. Then the line suddenly slowly headed out and I set the hook. This fish fought hard as she went to the left right into stickups and then I managed to get her out of there and then zoomed past me peeling out drag and went to the right and into the tulles. After some time, I horsed her out of them and slowly dragged her over some stickups and on to the shore. I was lucky as heck to land her after all of that and this bass went just a few ounces under 7lbs. I was pretty jazzed and left shortly after that and enjoyed a late breakfast when I got home

9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
Flipped a coin and just decided to just take a couple rods down to the SD River for a a short shore section before the heat arrives. A tiny bit cooler with a little early cloud cover, but knew that was not going to last.

Hey @Big C .... I don't come back, you'll know that some homeless guy is using my rods andBig C wrote: Fri Sep 05, 2025 12:47 pm You never cease to amaze me, especially your great results on the river.
all my baits down there in hopes of catching dinner....ha ha.
Fishing from shore is tough when trying to land a bass down there because all the stick-ups, tulles and other junk etc are lining the shore, so I have been very lucky landing fish from shore down there.
Anyway....Great so see some nice bass you and your daughter caught down there at Otay recently. Bet that was a blast!
Tight lines always buddy.

Re: 9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
Actually with this extreme heat we been having it is just too exhausting hauling everything back to my truckwith my kayak as I am no spring chicken...ha ha. Normally when it gets real hot in the summer each year I do not fish the river with my kayak because of that. I just thought to take a chance and fish a few hours from shore recentlybefore it gets too hot and have been pretty lucky with some of my recent catches.robert_smith wrote: Fri Sep 05, 2025 5:11 pm Nice Vinny how come u don’t take the yak over to river and fish from shore any reason or just the haul?
When the weather starts cooling off I will be back
in my kayak. Last Halloween I caught my biggest bass at the river which was a 7lbs 3oz.

Re: 9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
The two rods I took were a Castaway medium mag heavy spinning rod with 30 pound braid and a Dobyns Mag heavy bait caster with 40 pound braid. That bigger fish was peeling out drag and going through all types of stickups and areas where other line could break so I’m glad I was using straight braid.Fisheromen wrote: Sat Sep 06, 2025 11:26 am What are you horsing those big fish out with... straight braid??? Just a little bit of cooler weather well help motivate me and my Kayak down there.robert_smith wrote: Sat Sep 06, 2025 5:08 pm Yes sir that’s what I thought river best bite later in year cool Vinny I think Murray about to burst but yeah imma get over there in my yak
I read some fish reports on other sites saying how tough the top water bass bite has been. But with Murray one day it could be really bad and a couple days later everything works well.
Anyway, tight lines to you, buddy

Re: 9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
Yeah, sometimes over the years a bluegill will tap a plastic worm and I set the hook to nothing. Or at times it’s a tiny tiny bass and a few times actually have launched bass over the Kayak or Boat…..if the hook sets. I imagined they won’t be biting a plastic worm for a while after experiencing a flying lesson, ha ha ha. Oh course it is pretty nice when a small bite turns out to be a nice bass.Dfishin wrote: Fri Sep 05, 2025 2:22 pm Nicely done! Funny what those blue gill bites turn out to be sometimes.

Re: 9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
Have not seen @Mcfish for a long time and rumors are he has set up camp down at the
SD river after seeing my fishing posts of me fishing from shore down there. Luckily a friend who used to work with me
who was a photographer at the Union-Tribune forwarded me this pic of @Mcfish . He looks
healthy thank goodness....probably eating lots of fish he has been catching.

Beast of a 7 pounder right there. Looks bigger, again. I was picturing a tarpon or marlin jumping with you were describing the 4 pounder jumping.
Way to go!

Re: 9/5-SD River- "Oh yeah.. Again!"
I think a lot of the bass down there have never been caught or have only been caught once or so because they fight like crazy after being hooked. It’s hard to explain it in a post, but they are definitely wild and stronger than other bass I’ve caught at the lakes over the years. I however must say the bass at Sutherland sure put up one heck of a fight also.KillinTime wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 4:11 pm Beast of a 7 pounder right there. Looks bigger, again.
