This Still Works! Lake Miramar
Hey all,
I haven't gotten to post (or fish) in a while. I did have the opportunity to head out for just a few hours on Saturday to Lake Miramar. It was a nice mental therapy session just to decompress. The bonus was that I caught fish! I just wanted to take it back old school and fish a T-Rig Plastic worm. But I always like trying new things so I made sure that it was a worm and hook that I had not used before. I used the ZMan Mag FattyZ (Black/Blue Laminate) on a 5/0 Berkley Fusion hook with a 3/16oz weight on 10lb test. I have to say that I really like both the worm and hook. I say it like that specifically because I only ended up using 1 worm and 1 hook all day. The hook was in the satin finish and seemed both light and strong. The worm looked great, gave the profile that I wanted to use and was super durable.
I ended up catching 9 bass from 6am-8:30am with 3 over 3 pounds. Biggest went 3.92. I concentrated on the edge between the grass and the tules where there was not grass. That was in 15-25ft of water. Nothing on the tules and nothing in the grass. It was super fun just getting back out there. After the sun came out the bite just died!
If you are interested here is the link for the new video with more details and some fun stories and history. Cheers all! See you on the water!

Re: This Still Works! Lake Miramar
Fished Miramar almost every weekend with my dad starting in the early 70s. I always remember walking along the shore and fishing between the tulles because there was a lot of space back then to fish from shore. When we threw plastic worms, we always put a split shot up the line so that the worm would go down slow slowly and not get lost in the grass below. Really enjoyed your video and love the stories and of course great to see you back on the lake where you landed that huge bass. What’s coincidental after seeing your post, I was thinking of heading up there to fish tomorrow or soon as almost every trip up there has been really fun. I wonder if we walked by each other years ago while fishing? Anyway, best wishes to you and your family and tight lines always.
ps. Chris, you are a smart guy using a Z Man worm(and save $$$), as I often go through so many other plastic worms that those
bass just tear the heck up each time I am there.

Hey Vinny thanks for the kind words and sharing the history. Going by each other was entirely possible. As for the plastics I’ve got so many different ones already but I love trying new stuff. Cheers! Hopefully see you out there soon.VinnyBass wrote: Tue Jul 29, 2025 5:51 pm Fished Miramar almost every weekend with my dad starting in the early 70s. Re: This Still Works! Lake Miramar
Thanks for the great video, it brought me back to my first bass experience, two of my buddies from work and I decided to go fishing we ended up going to Hodges rented a boat, we all bought a container of night crawlers, we fished the morning with no bites, I had brought my small binoculars and started checking if anyone was catching fish when I saw these kids bringing in bass after bass and as I looked closer to see what they were using they were using worms but they seemed to have different colored worms we decided to ask them what they were using, they said plastic worms, we all were thinking wait we have real worms and hadn’t caught anything, we decided to take a lunch break and saw there was a restaurant, so went in and noticed they sold plastic worms so we stocked on them like they were candy, we ate or lunch which was excellent and we headed back out to fish and we decided to drift the tulles and I picked up my first bass, my buddies did too so we were stoked as we caught seven between us.
We decided we would go fishing every Wednesday as we all had the same day off, I was and still am a tackle junky and discovered Barnacle Bills bait shop and I stocked up on every color worm they had, we did very well for a month or so when we weren’t catching as many fish so we started looking at other baits.
I haven’t fished plastic worms in a long long time, so thanks for reminding me of them and I’m going to bring some with me next time.
Back in those days it was hard to find worms that floated, and I thought that’s what I wanted and I started putting a small piece of broken up toothpicks in the tail to help the tail float, now with all Zman products float no need for that.
Thanks again for the great post.
