8/14-Miramar Morning

Post by VinnyBass »

Decided to head up to Miramar again since the last time I was there July 24. A little foggy in the morning but was able to throw on
some random busters here and there. They seemed to be more focused on the small baitfish they were chasing. It was a little frustrating having a few roll over or basically miss my bait, but did manage one finally on an IMA Skimmer. Then I tossed a number of reaction baits and started landing some clones with a couple healthier ones here and there. Stayed out in deeper water the whole morning and it started to get pretty darn hot, so after I landed my last bass on a blade, it was time to head home. The bass there really fight as I believe many have never been hooked due to lack of fishing pressure. Anyway, lost a handful down deep and had 3 come unbuttoned on the jump, but ended up landing 10 bass in my kayak. And while it is always fun to get back on the water, I really enjoyed blasting
the AC in my truck on the way home. :-)

a few pics:
Lots of clones
(With jerk baits I always seem to draw blood
with the second treble hook)

That blade thing looks sweet! Just found one my self, and I will try it out there in a few days perhaps. Mirmar is my home lake now that Hodges is closed. Are you fishing it on the bottom?

It is funny as I did not throw any blades for a long while. Not last year, because Miramar was closed to watercraft, but the year
before I caught some bass on it there and then threw some at at Murray last year and caught some. So this year both at Murray
and Miramar I have actually caught some of my healthier bass up to 4.75lbs on the blades. There is one thing in common with the
bass I have caught on them and that is all of them were caught pretty deep. Not actually bouncing them off the bottom like I would
do in the winter time, but just making long casts and letting them go down to about 25-30' and just retrieving them with a pumping
action like you would do with a jerk bait. Anyway....good luck (aka...tight lines). :-)

My escape act was to get off the lake before I melted and it was close, but I succeeded....ha ha

Been to Vegas, tons and tons of times, but never saw their show. I am guessing that they sure must talk a lot if you are comparing me to them? :-)

Are you using a fish finder while fishing the blade bait? Or throwing near the busters or just fishing out a lil bit deeper off the tules?

A little of both as I look for shad or bait balls with the finder and throw long casts beyond them and let the bait fall deep.
When bass go aftershad or baitfish there are a number of them that end up sinking towards the bottom and there are often
bass down deeper where the fish are busting waiting for an easy meal. Again, most of the action is up near the top especially
when the bass bust the surface which a fluke, jerk bait or topwater bait is a good choice, but almost all of the bass I have caught
with the blade baits have been down deeper. I don't have a lot of patience but found that is the only pattern that seems to work
for my and glad I dug them out of one of my tackle boxes where they were sitting idol for years until the other year. My buddy
Joe used to throw a blade out and let it hit the bottom and them slowly retrieve it back and catch bass
close to the bottom or get snagged. I just kind of do the same thing but do not let it hit the bottom.

Hope you are feeling a lot better.
Always more fun to fish when you are healthy and look forward to seeing you back one day at Murray again, once you get tired of
catching so many bass at Otay.... :-)

Otay is only open Wed, Sat & Sun, but I gotta say....I'm with @CorsoEnthusiast on the quality of that lake When it comes to Bass fishing.

It's the only lake that has rivaled Barrett for the numbers of bass I have caught, and the size/quality of fish is usually much better on average. Similar to the aforementioned Barrett it has every kind of cover and fishing condition imaginable, so you can fish all kinds of techniques with success once you figure out the lake in my experience.

I feel like I figure out a new way to catch ‘em every time I’m there honestly. That lake is so much fun and it’s also very tube friendly

I appreciate the information. I went out to Miramar a couple weeks ago and don’t believe I had small enough baits for what they were eating. Ended up buying some smaller baits on TW that should do the trick but I’ve had a blade bait sitting around for years that I’ve been wanting to throw. Thanks for giving me the motivation.

Thanks Vinny for the update. I have to get back out there. I haven't been there since it has reopened. Cheers!
