10/17 Mission Beach

Post by Nelson 1 »

First time Surf fishing. I was fishing in the morning for 7:00 am to 9:00 am. Caught 5 Perch. A lot of fish nibbling on my bait. Maybe I will try a small hook next time. No seaweed that was a good thing.

Thank you. I started with the Carolina rig. Then switch to the Texas rig because I was having problems with the.Leader line getting tangled around the weight and the main line. I was surprised on how shallow the fish were. I would have had more fish if they would eat the bait and not peck at it .

Yea, those perch do that a lot.. I pretty much stick with the C-rig.. I’ve experimented with the T-rig a few times but always came back to the C-rig…. What gear are you using?.. I’m not a SD guy but love coming down there and fishing when ever I can… That corbina that I’m holding in my avatar, is my personal best that I got just up the street from Mission Beach, in Pacific Beach..

I hope to catch a fish that big some day. I have a 2500 spinning reel with a 7 foot rod. I will try the c rig again next time. Maybe I am letting it sit to long out in the water before I reel it in.

I fish PB and MB almost weekly. You can drop down to mosquito hook either #6 or#8. I will say that this will essentially just net you some smaller perch. Alot of the fish in the socal surf are very small mouthed so smallish hooks are better but judging by the pictured perch I'd say the size you are using is good. Carolina rig is almost the only thing I use on those beaches due to soft sandy bottom but other more hard structure beaches I like drop shot and high low.

My problem was I kept getting my leader line Tangled around my main line. I think I was casting wrong.. I will try the c rig next time I go out , I just need practice.

What size and type of weight were you using. Also what swivel type? Other than that it's just keeping the slack out of your line and walking with your bait.

I was using a tungsten bullet weight half ounce. Which I realize is too heavy because I was casting like 40 yards and the fish were like in waist to knee deep water. So I will Use a lighter weight. Did not use any swivels I used bobber stoppers. I thought that way I could adjust my length of leader line. So maybe I'll have to use a swivel.

Ah yes! That's your issue. 1/2 oz isn't terrible but maybe a bit heavy. The lack of swivel is the culprit for your wrapping issue.

As far as my notes on weight. I try to stay between 1/4-1/2. I pay attention to current and grass with weight selection. More grass means less weight. If your bait is drifting slower then the salad you end up gathering a lot of it on your line and it slides down to your tackle.

I'll be out again this Thursday or Friday. If you see me feel free to come up. Alot easier to learn on the water. Grey hat tan backpack!
