Re: Torrey Pines skunk city

Tides...goodness, certainly one of the most important elements in surf fishing. Here are a few things I've observed over the years: When fishing on beaches with lots of kelp/eel grass I like to fish from an hour after low tide, up to high tide. This keeps most of the kelp/grass on the sand and not ...

Re: Mission Beach 9/19 - 9/21

I have often found that when I see dolphin they are associated with yellowfin croaker. The croaker tend to run in schools, rather than the lonely corbina, and ball-up bait in the surf. Dolphin/porpoise follow the commotion and feed also on the fin bait yellowfin are finding. I can't tell you how ...

Surf Fishing Seminar at Tackle Day Nov. 1

Hey fellow surf anglers,
I'm going to be giving a surf fishing seminar at Tackle Day, November 1 at Fisherman's landing. I'll be covering the equipment I use and will demonstrate how I hook and fish baits like lug/bloodworms, sand crabs, ghost shrimp, mussel... and whatever other baits I can find ...

Re: Mission Beach 11/4

Try finding some bigger mussel and use the lip. You can feed it up the hook, like a worm, and it will both stay on the hook well and look like a worm as you retreive it slowly toward shore. I've also found that if you crush mussel you can use the meat with a bit of shell attached...as this is how ...

Re: Mission Beach 11/10

Great post with so much good info...Thanks J!

Mussel works often, not all the time, but is a great addition to your bait quiver...plus they are free! Just got a report from the South Bay with one angler using mussel getting seven corbina this week! I've always found that a variety of live and fresh ...

Re: 11/19 Mission Beach

Beautiful fish! Great to hear the water is clearing. I wonder if it's because the swells are coming from the NW so it can brush the kelp away when the current is moving south?

Thanks for the report!

Re: Mission Beach 11/23

Thanks again for the continuing report! I don't know if you've tried this...I like to take the lip from bigger mussel, just the lip, and thread it up my hook, like a worm. It stays great on the hook for hard casts and the trailing 2" below the hook looks like a worm as you retreive it along the ...

Re: Big Low tides

I am definitely intrigued by the small waves and the low tide... in my head, its like pier fishing from the shore. You can the bait/lure WAY farther into the water than you ever would in normal conditions! I just typically only have morning availability to fish, and the extreme high tides can ...

Re: Mission Beach 12/13

Just a thought. When I was growing up we had a strip of ivy growing next to the street. It was full of Snails. I would gather up those maybe 20-30 at a time in the early morning. My Mom Froze them and when we went Surf Fishing, which was often, we would cut them in half with scissors and hook it ...

Re: Mission Beach 12/18

Nice looking walleye! I wish they were a bit bigger, I like how they taste! But typically the ones that seem to live on our shores are small, and a quick internet search tells me that even at their biggest, they're still not particularly large.

I once asked the DFG (now DGW) if there was a ...
