Oniomania

Post by Gotfish? »

So what were the notable purchases lately, especially on Black Friday sales?

I have not bought much, mostly a few TPE plastics but did get a Daiwa SV TW 70 baitcasting reel (to add to the one I have already), almost half price. I would get more stuff except I am running out of room. I somewhat satisfy the compulsion by adding items to my wish list (most turn out to be unneeded in hindsight) but the evil retailers tempt me by offering deals that are too good to refuse.

Vinny, Carpkiller, any others?

My bait monkey keep whisper on my ear to buy it, but on another ear I keep hearing NO NO NO, your wife gonna kill you for real. I really want to buy another catfish reel but my Abu 5600 still kicking and i hardly use 6500C3 and CI4 2500, want another left hand Daiwa but don’t know which one or what to use it for
I did spend a little here and there for mostly bait and plastic but majority amount went into gears to keep me warm, like warmer vest with 20k power bank, winter shoes and wool sock.

The bait monkey tells me to buy some Junebug colored baits for FOMO but I have plenty of soft plastics in colors the fish bite already. The bait monkey has been listening to Vinny.

One of the best pieces of layer clothing to add warmth with minimal volume is a neck gaiter or turtleneck dickey.

Let’s see….nothing too exciting.
In the last 4 days or so, I have bought 5 packs
of 7” Roboworms on sale at Tackle Warehouse. Also 2 packs of Googan krackin craws(yes Junebug), a spool of 15lb test Isorline and 2 packs of Nako tungsten worm weights. Oh yeah, I also ordered 2 “V” tails for a couple Tiny Klash swimbaits.
(Darn….I totally forgot that a week before Black Friday, I did order a Dobyns Champion XP 7’4” bait casting rod). :-)

I have to exercise restraint this time of year.

Because I don't wanna be a typical consumer, where my paycheck immediately goes to $hit i don't need, I always have to sit there and ask myself the following:

"Do you NEED it, or do you WANT it?"

So, this year, I used some discount codes to get some tungsten weights, and a few pack of hooks that I need to re-up on. The days of spending money on things because I wanted them, instead of needed them, I think are behind me. It didn't take a pill, it just took growing up. :-D

Fishing tackle is nice, but so is a nice vacation with the loved ones. With all the money I didn't spend last year on stuff I just simply wanted to provide me retail therapy, it was spent in other ways.

Novelty seeking is an actual term. Why we always want new things as humans is such a trip. Guess we're all in need of that serotonin and it comes in various methods.

Novelty seeking, thrill seeking, risk taking, compulsive shopping and gambling are generally thought to be related to dopamine. So are caffeine, nicotine, cocaine and methamphetamine. Serotonin is more complicated and affects a host of other things. We need both, just in moderation.

I have a buddy who's a compulsive tackle whore and a pack rat. A few years ago, I was picking him up to go fish somewhere, and I had to go BAD. I let him know that I needed to blow up his toilet, and he was forced to let me into his apartment, and it literally was a labyrinth of rods, reels, tackle, everything. There were plastics that this guy had hoarded from the 80s that had already reached their life expectancy. Reels that were still in boxes. Rods that still had the tags and the shrink wrap around the handles. Tackle that had never been opened.

The other day, I finally did inventory on what I had, and realized that I would continue to buy the same $hit, even though I already had packs of the same bait. That's when I decided enough was enough, and moved to the "need" versus "want" litmus test. I don't want to end up on an episode of Hoarders. I did the, "Have you used this bait in the last year?" test and gave away half my stuff to more needy folk. It's always cool seeing people at your local pond that you donated all this gear to, catching stuff on baits that you would never throw, or stopped throwing since 2005.

Although, I didbuy a full on Simms bib and jacket, as being cold and wet is the worst feeling on Earth. Of course, the moment I buy the set, we enter a period of zero rain.

But as the saying goes, "I'd rather have it, and not need it, than need it and not have it."

Some of you old heads may remember some gatherings where we just showed up and traded stuff. Not sold. Traded. I only attended one of these meet-ups, at Lake Murray. Maybe it's time....
