ISO Fly rod w broken butt section for a project....8-9 wt?

Post by Carpkiller »

Shot in the dark....but pack a lunch. This will take a minute.

After using a bunch of different baitcasting rods in my float tube, I have found the one characteristic that works best for me; a parabolic action that unloads slowly.

Could I make a rod around 7 feet long, based on a fly rod?

Alpha test: Tried a spinning reel on one of my budget 8/9 weight rods, tied on a quarter ounce casting plug and the tip action pretty good.

Pretty sure some of you have old fly rods with busted tip sections...I do too.

But if anyone has an old fly rod with thrashed grips or a busted reel seat that you're never gonna get around to fixing....maybe you could loan it to me.

If this project doesn't work out...I'll give it back. Including the sawed-off piece of the butt.

ThanCKs...
There's nothin' wrong with goin' nowhere, baby
But we should be goin' nowhere fast.....

I have the worst fly rod in the world and I can give it to you. A telescopic backpacking rod, combo spinning/fly rod with broken tip, detachable butt for conversion to spinning. Old rod, all fiberglass. No need to return. Solid buggy whip like action. It will take you like 10 minutes to put on a new tip and then you will have your dream rod.

Not inexpensive, but you might get lucky and find a used Calstar GX7. More parabolic than a 700xl. I have a GX8 and an unobtanium GX9 and they are my favorite rods.
