Hodges update

Post by tomnilll »

Well...this may end up being my last trip this year since they close end of the month but it was a good one (sort of).

Started the day at about 6:45 am with a lipless crankbait that I have always wanted to catch fish with...casts great, looks good in the water, everything but until today just never put it in the right spot I guess. Well today was another story.

Second cast...so now we are talking! a few casts later hit again but i missed it. Then...

They were getting bigger! Quite a few steps down towards the dam and a bunch more casts, and then...

Oh no! size is going the wrong way.

So I switched to a dropshot and 3rd cast hooked a nice one...too nice, broke my 10lb mono  so back to the lipless crankbait I went and then...it happened. I hooked a monster. It was even nice enough to jump all the way out of the water (which terrified me) so i could admire it's girth. I am going to say double digits and given that it looked way bigger than anything I have landed this year...by a lot! and then...down it went into the rocks and broke off my braid and took my new favorite lure. Tried a bit more with some senkos and dropshots but my heart was not in it after loosing the giant. Went home at 10:30, and overall I am very pleased with my first season on this lovely lake.

a couple lessons I learned:

1. always buy more than 1 of every lure...what if it works and you loose it?
2. if you think you have a bait that is a winner, keep throwing it the fish will eventually understand your persistence and eat it.

P.S. I did not see a single paddleboarder or windsurfer...

Great report. Better buy 2x of every color as well. You never know which color might work. And 2x of each size as well. And 2x of each brand. Sound matters some times. I got a tackle problem…

Braid + rocks = heartbreak

Stick to mono if there is structure

Also, better to see it than not see it at all.
