PB 8/15

[Perch killer]

Same old, same old more or less this am. Beach looked flat as a pancake with the incoming just after low tide. When I saw a couple of surfers walk out & then drop a foot or so by T22, decided to set up there. Looked like a few shallow holes. Much prefer fishing the last few hours of a rising tide but that would have been around 10 to noon which wasn't going to work with the beach crowds & parking issues on a weekend. So the perch bites were off & on and managed 4 , largest 8"+ over about 2 hours. No corbina sightings but I guess they're around, here & there. Haven't even seen a sting ray in over a month & guess the guitar fish & leos aren't around either.

An interesting side note to my earlier post. One of the beaches I fished a couple of weeks ago was Coronado, straight out from the Del near the rocks. I don't go there often as the salad is notorious from the SW swells over the summer months. And it was that day also, almost unfishable. But I hung around because another angler about 30 yards or so from me got into something big - - largest spot fin I've personally seen, at least 22 - 24". That was followed by a nice fat YFC, looked about 15 - 16 range, good size for that species. Me, just the usual few perch and using the same bait, mussel meat.
Go figure !

When i saw PB in the title i was expecting a big report from you i got some dried lugworms recently, am curious to try that out when i get back to SD. happy for that other angler though! i had a similar experience in front of the Del last summer where I saw someone pull a legal halibut while i only caught a few perch.

Mussel meat, same as I was using on a c-rig, 2 or 4 hook

Thanks for the report! I'm probably bringing mussel meat when I get back to the beach next weekend, too. No crabs to be found and the Gulp worms seem to 'only' catch perch. I still love a nice morning at the beach but would be nice to feel like there's a chance at something slightly more exciting, ha. Guess I'm jaded now that I'm over a year into this

Although reality is just that life has been a bit busy and all these storms seem to be impacting things mostly during availability windows.

Almost makes me look forward to the winter months again, when at least the perch we're catching are big!
