May 10 Beautiful Day Tough Bite
In line at the gate early and after being rewarded by a spectacular sunrise, we found the bite tougher than usual. No reaction or chase bite for us so picked away with plastics, mostly flylined senkos and t-rigged pumpkin mag fattyz. For a couple of guys whose mom’s are watching from up above, we had a great mom’s day at the Big B.

Hey John,
Sorry the bite was slow. Looks like you had a nice day though.

How many fish are you missing by being home to make this report while there still biting?

Lol plenty SP! But at this ripe old age, the days of staying late battling wind and heat are long over. Those fish are all for youStinkyPinky23 wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 6:41 am How many fish are you missing by being home to make this report while there still biting?

Really bad from about 10ft up. We split time throwing deeper and up shallow with smaller profile baits to avoid it as much as possible. It would have been much easier with a reaction/chase bite too.

Re: May 10 Beautiful Day Tough Bite
I second that emotion! I got on the water immediately and off at 3pm. I got a total of 19 fish with 2 fish over 15". No pattern at all. 2 on top, a few on jigs, a few on the Mini Flashback and a few while fishing for bluegill. The bluegill was the big win for me for the day. I ended up with lots of those and even gave my rod to another guy when I was loading up my stuff so he could catch a few. He only had 7 bass for the day and was very frustrated. It was a gorgeous day outside. My only regret was staying too long to look for a bite. I think I would have been happier if I had left by 11am.
Great to see you out there John! Cheers!

Any particular tips for the bluegill? I figure I’ll run across a few easily enough if I throw on some small plastics…Pourboy wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 1:24 pm I second that emotion! Ive thrown 2” curly tail grubs in various colors on the smaller ball jigs like 1/32nd’s with good success for bass and plenty of bluegill bycatch.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 1:36 pmAny particular tips for the bluegill? Thanks for reminding me about the curly tail, I’ve got some in my surf bag for perch, but forgot to pack them for this upcoming trip.JWall wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 2:53 pmIve thrown 2” curly tail grubs in various colors on the smaller ball jigs like 1/32nd’s with good success for bass and plenty of bluegill bycatch.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 1:36 pmAny particular tips for the bluegill? Thanks for the report guys! Were all the fish small? I was there for the opener, and it was literally a dinkfest! I landed 38,lost at least 8-10. Most were under a pound if that. My biggest was almost 4, but he was a stand alone by far.

Re: May 10 Beautiful Day Tough Bite
A few years ago Barrett was really tough one summer but the bluegills were always on the chew. We had tied on the small grubs for them but surprisingly caught more bass than gills. Keeping them stuck on those small jig heads was another story though but it made for some good drama once bit.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 2:57 pmThanks for reminding me about the curly tail, I’ve got some in my surf bag for perch, but forgot to pack them for this upcoming trip.JWall wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 2:53 pmIve thrown 2” curly tail grubs in various colors on the smaller ball jigs like 1/32nd’s with good success for bass and plenty of bluegill bycatch.Osidecoffee wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 1:36 pmAny particular tips for the bluegill? Re: May 10 Beautiful Day Tough Bite
Small plastics (curly and strait tail tiny baits) on ball heads are always a go to there for me. Yes, I can catch more bass there sometime that way than any other way. The BP always fight hard and are so much fun. Bring 4lb test and have a blast. Sometimes (if I remember) I will bring some tiny Mepps or Rooster Tails too. I could not get them this time on anything but tiny curl tail grubs on a 1/32oz head.
