Party crasher

Post by Gotfish? »

I had a good spotty bite going and then this guy decides to horn in. Too big for the net, too big for the tube, had to kick to shore just to land it, probably took at least an hour just to land. Released to get bigger. Got on a 5/16 ounce jighead and 4" clear grub, 6 lb test line. 26.8 lbs, PB, my next best was 9.1 lbs. Wound up with 38 spotties, 1 smelt and 2 halibut for the day.

Amazing catch. Unbelievable that you didn’t get chewed off. Where was the jig?

The jig hook caught in the corner of the mouth so the line never even rubbed against the fish. I felt the line afterwards and there wasn't even any abrasion on the line. When I got to shore, I put my rod in the rod holder, the fish slipped into the water (fortunately very worn out) and I went over and grabbed the fish. The fish thrashed around a bit and broke my rod but at least I got the fish.

I have had halibut this size before chase hooked spotties up to the tube then turn around at the last minute. Nice to finally get one this big. I was about 1200' off the beach when I hooked up so it took a long time to kick over to the beach.

Glad I didn't have my BFS setup with 4 lb line.

I still have a bit of an afterglow today.

Great fish!
Glad you posted the pic of the bait. Those sickle hooks are a few thousandths thinner wire than the Owner hooks...this erases any doubts about their durability!

There always seems to be some luck involved on the big ones. Good on you for staying with it for an hour.

I really like the fine wire hooks for fishing with light line. The points are like needles and penetrate the jaw so much easier than the thick wire. For the most part, I do not do anything to set the hook other than wind down quickly and then raise the rod tip once I feel resistance.
