San V 5/25 S*** show

Post by Moose »

Finally got a chance to get back out on the water for the 1st time since Easter weekend and damn it’s a whole new lake from when I was there last. It’s 18-20ft higher than last visit. Never seen the lake so high.

Today was a total s*** show for me. Started out throwing a spinnerbait and on the third cast I hit my trolling motor and snapped off my bait 🤬 While looking for my spinnerbait box I managed to knock a rod overboard but quickly got it back. A little bit later I started throwing a frog. I couldn’t even hit the damn water with it! I hit the bushes, I hit rocks, I hit pieces of wood, I even hit myself when a backlash caused the bait to shoot back at me! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Finally gave up and picked up a dropshot. 1st cast I managed a sickly looking 2lb fish. A few minutes later as I am retying I manage to knock another rod overboard just as my trolling motor( which was on spot lock) kicked in to get me back on the spot. So my rod is now quickly sinking and moving towards the back of the boat at the same time. I spin around to try and grab it, I’m on my belly……and also on a crankbait! So now I’m pinned to a crankbait, which is also pinned to the carpet of my boat! I was able to reach the rod with another rod and slowly was able to get in back within reach and in the boat. After getting everything unhooked and back ready to fish I did get a couple more dropshot fish and one angry male bed fish before calling it a day about 11 when the wakeboard boats took over the lake.

Still good to get back out……I think anyway 🤔

On a side note. Today was the third time I have seen this. All in different parts of the lake.

I was fishing in the very back of Barona, by where the waterfall used to be. I hear, what sounds like, a big fish bust the surface. I turn and see a swirl about the size that a sea lion would leave. I’m talking a HUGE swirl!

I have seen this out near the bouy line in Barona and in Tollroad. I have yet to see what is creating that huge swirl. I’m assume it’s a big catfish but I honestly don’t know.

Anyone else seen this?

May have been a s*** show, but I think we all have been there, at least once. Thanks for the story and the report.

I look at this like you survived one of THOSE days better than most would. Good to hear a report from you again.

Days like those make you appreciate the fantastic days where you can do no wrong. My Pops always said the best thing about fishing is Practice , Practice, Practice. You got to keep aiming for the zone, if you don’t hit some limbs, you aren’t close enough. Accuracy comes with persistence. You will get it back.

Geez...and I thought the start of my fishing day at the lake of D & K was tough. You definitely had a lot more of crazy things going on and
despite all of that..bounced back wonderfully and still caught bass. Great to see a report from you and look forward to many more in the
future of course missing the s***show part...ha ha. :-)
Tight lines always Moose.

San V is a whole new lake at this level! All the fish that were up tight 2 weeks ago, have mostly bailed out to the deeper sumac, manzanita, and scrub oaks! All the big swirls and belly flops I saw last time out were big ol carp..they're are some monsters still in there! I'm hoping the busters start up soon so that I don't have to keep finessing dropshots through 25' deep trees!

Are you sure you didn't go to the Vinnybass School of S***shows? He has mastered the art of getting hung on anything within 100yds of his yak...mostly on things in his yak! But we still love him, even when he's cranky!

I wonder if it could be a striper.
