Re: Mission Bay

I hooked something big while drifting in deep water in the big bay...it fought hard for a few seconds, then came off. Reeled up to find my line was chewed nearly to the breaking point above the plain lead torpedo sinker. Figured it was a halibut that grabbed it because it was bouncing along the ...

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week

Getting a bass out of (or through) the grass when fishing from shore can be a challenge.

You might try going with thinner baits, and smaller hooks.

Even a small spotty can totally inhale a lure on a 3/0 hook, but sometimes if they don't grab it just right, that hook's too ...

Re: Best Float Tube Lakes

otay, el cap, murray.
dont be afraid of the bay either.

What he said.
Both bays can be a lot of fun on a float tube, once you figure out the tides..as far as being able to get back to your launch spot. Catching spotted bay bass can be stupid-easy, and you might get into a dozen other species ...

Re: Did you GUT hook a bass?

Yea the first video is quite long but I liked the research and explanation part. Here’s another video that’s much easier to see and follow.

Re: Agua Hedionda Lagoon (Legal) Access

There's no legal access between the railroad and the freeway as far as I know.

You can shore fish the outer lagoon (West of the railroad tracks. .

If you have a kayak you can launch here:
agua hedionda lagoon ramp.jpg
The far eastern part of the lagoon is a reserve...no fishing.

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week

This is the bay fishing forum, so I hope I am not stepping out of line with my post, but I have found during summer months that surf fishing from the beach is quite productive. I get more action on the beach than I do in the bay, but I am mainly a surf fisher. From your post, it sounds like you ...

Midway, huh...

Was just talking to a neighbor about how after a few trips, you feel pretty safe while tubing or kayaking in the bay....then I see the news about some drunk a ss ftard running a 60 foot sportfishing boat into the Midway.

And people don't want to tube the bay because there might be a shark nearby ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

12lb mono works great throwing lucky crafts. I throw them on conventional bass rod. No problem with distance on any jerk bait style with weight transfer system.

12-pound pulls in a legal halibut in surf pretty well?

I have pulled a couple of barely legal halibut out of the surf on 6 lb ...

Re: Where and how to catch edible fish in SD?

What is the "basic rod" that you have?

Probably a spinning reel with a 7 foot rod rated for 4 to 10 lb test gives you a lot of flexibility to fish different places.

So. Whatcha got?

And what days of the week can you fish?

There are people who might invite you along...and it's easier to show ...

Croakin' at Mariner's Basin...

Took a trip down Memory Lane with shrimp pump in hand. Historically, good bite on incoming tide and today followed the pattern. '

Deal confirmed.

Gulp 6 inch sandworms. On Amazon right now. 10 per pack. $5.50 per pack.

I do not see an end date on this deal; suspect they're moving out older stock. Don't delay! Buy today!

These are known as "fish crack" for a reason.

Re: Did you GUT hook a bass?

Yeah, the skinny hemostats are the way to go. I keep these on a lanyard around my neck....but also have a skinnier set in the pack for the really small fish. The Dr. Fisherman hemostats are a bit less...intrusive....when dealing with a green sunfish that somehow ate a 1/0 hook.....

Hit the same spot. Pumped three dozen shrimp and got to work.

31 fish today...six species...

YFC, turbot, round ray, calico bass (tiny), spotted bay bass, and get this....eleven rock wrasse. Eight of the wrass(es?) would qualify for my pb for that fish. They were 13 inches plus ...
