I don't have either of those, but the Fuego reels have a good reputation.
One note:
The link to the reel you posted is for the 2000 size reel; I think a 2500 size (Like Zhao has) would balance better on a rod that's 8 feet six inches long.
I mostly use 7 foot rods in the surf, with a 2000 reel ...

Re: The Fish Were Stacked!
Great video.
I've watched several of them and just realized that you're a lefty, but you use a "righty" reel.
I'm kinda the opposite...I cast with my right hand, and crank with my left.
Oh...and one more difference....you catch a buttload of fish!
have fun

So Fat Guys Fishing has a mold for a lure that's very close in shape to a couple of my favorite soft jerkbaits...but with a long flat tail. Of COURSE I bought it...my VISA card isn't maxed out yet. Yet.

Re: So....Hover Rigs....
True, a hover rig isn't going to do anything that a tube bait won't do..and both are grass grabbers. I am only interested because of the details that injection-molded baits have (overall profile, scales, gill plates, faces)....and different ways I can color them, compared to the tube baits.

Re: So....Hover Rigs....
Vinny,
There was a day when something like that yamamoto bait was working better than anything else on the spotties in the Cays. I didn't have 'em...but a kayak guide's client was killing with 'em. I swapped him some of my other baits for a couple of his, and I caught spotties 'til the baits were ...

Re: Help, mullet advice needed!
The only time I've seen mullet feeding was when they ate floating green weeds (not grass)....and nowhere near the bottom. I have never caught one on a lure (although one tore the skirt off my swimbait once).
Maybe a long wispy green ly?
I have caught a couple on bait in a creek....this one was ...

Re: South Bay 11/16
Has anyone tried eating smelt? According to the internet, they’re not bad table fare.
When I was a kid, I ate just about everything we'd catch off the OB pier.
Scaled, gutted, and grilled whole, no matter what species.
Smelt were good, a bit stronger taste than queenfish or yellowfin ...

3 stars on the Meh-meter...
Chose the afternoon sted morning.
Coronado side of bay.
Pros: calm weather, rode the tail end of the tide out and back, confirmed the effectiveness of a certain newish lure. Hung out for a few hours after dark with a couple of guys (Andy and Bryce) bait fishing; got to see 'em land a few bat rays ...

Can we talk restrooms?
Couple of things.
If you fish the Coronado side, you may find yourself needing to access a restroom, after driving over the bay and drinking two cups of coffee. Some of the restrooms in parks don’t open very early.
Okay, down in the cays area, check the map for 101 grand caribe causeway. This is ...

Re: Surf Session Planning
Yeah, it's hard to get a multi-species bite in winter....but this is when the bigger barred surf perch can be caught more easily.
Also, having a backup plan is a good idea when possible.
Mission/Pacific Beaches afford bayside options if the surf side is unfishable.
Same goes for Carlsbad ...

Re: SD Bay in winter
Picked the wrong spot yesterday (Sunday the 5th). Only got 16 (I think) spotties while my friends were a half-mile away roping a ton of fish. Also got a few short halibut.....and had a big one hooked for a while.
So if the halibut spits the hook and ends up foul-hooked right in the middle of its ...

Re: SD Bay in winter
I landed this 10 lb, 31 inch 'but without net or gaff......by tiring it out and sliding it up over the spreader bar and grabbing it by the gill plate on the far side...and holding its head (and my jig) against my chest. No, it didn't work on the first try...or the second...you get the picture ...

Re: Party crasher
Great fish!
Glad you posted the pic of the bait. Those sickle hooks are a few thousandths thinner wire than the Owner hooks...this erases any doubts about their durability!
