Re: Public Docks ?

I think the deck structure you refer is just to the north of the location I posted. It could be a good spot too.

We all want to see the kid put on fish.

Re: Sand Spike and Long Casts.

Most surf fishing in SoCal is done close in, often even sight fishing. Described in the book https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/surf-fishing-the-light-line-revolution---the-complete-guide-to-surf-fishing-the-california-coast_bill-varney-jr/39625644/item/23582516/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm ...

Re: Skin Cancer **kind of graphic**

The most effective sun protection is SPF50 or above is clothing although I prefer sunscreen for the face myself. But a Buff (face and neck gaiter) is even better. If you find a Buff constricts your breathing, then try a bracket like https://www.amazon.com/Internal-Comfortable-Breathing-Protector-%EF ...

Re: New fish = New rod

This is a great rod for the money, as good as most rods in the $100 range: https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-lag701mfb-laguna-trigger-rod.html

I use it in the bay for 1/4 ounce jig heads with 6 lb mono. I like the split grip too but most of those rods have minimal foregrip so I add my own with ...

Re: Advice For 1st Time Visit

Lots of snags so I mostly use weedless. Since I am using weedless, I can usually get away with using 6 pound line. Hooked fish will usually swim out to deeper water.

Can't go wrong with Senkos, drop shot and Ned rigs. If there is a lot of stringy moss around, then a Texas rigged Senko is nice ...

Re: Hello and a Request for Halibut Advice

Halibut in San Diego Bay are likely to have high heavy metals contamination from industrial activities. I always release them anyhow.

Have caught lots of them, including legals, while fishing for spotties. Learn how to catch spotties and you will catch halibut.

Re: Agua Hedionda Lagoon Filled With Vegetation

You don't say what lure you are using. The most grass proof lure for me has been either a wobble head jig or a Slider jighead paired with a curly tail grub or paddle tail bait. Then put a swivel, snap or split ring about 12-18" above the lure as a grass catcher. Most of the grass is suspended so the ...

Re: Braid and Leader Line

Lots of brands will work fine. I use 8 lb Gliss for spinning and 6 lb Ande mono for baitcasting (but have one reel with 10 lb for heavier lures). For leader, I just use 6 or 10 lb Vanish fluorocarbon, typically only 1-2' long. J-braid is nice for spinning too. I rarely get broken off even though ...

Re: Fish recipes

Pickle juice tuna:

Cut about 1 lb of tuna into 1" thick pieces or so. Marinate each side 1-2 hours in dill pickle juice.
Remove from marinade and pat dry.
Mix 2 heaping tsp of mayo with 1 heaping tsp of tajine powder. Brush on all sides of the tuna. This adds some flavor and also keeps it from ...

Re: Mission Bay 20/24

FYI, you should consider physical therapy. I had some surgery on my shoulder a few years ago, went to physical therapy and regained full range of movement. Then a few months later, started hurting and went to physical therapy again and with a few exercises, problem went away in a few days.

I have ...

Favorite Ned Rig now

I have done quite well on traditional Ned rigs (weedless and exposed hook) in the bay and at Barrett. But I needed something more weedless and really like the swinging jig style baits. So here is what I used yesterday:

Main line: 6 lb mono
Swivel to main line, this catches grass that is floating in ...

Re: Favorite Ned Rig now

"Swivel to main line, this catches grass that is floating in the bait or can attach to braid" should be "Swivel to main line, this acts as a grass catcher and is used to join to braid if that is used as the mainline".

Re: Best luck so far

Nice fish. Never had a ray make a run of more than a few feet. Often when hooked on a ray, I initially thought I was snagged on the bottom only to realize the snag moved slowly.

Re: Any advice for Diamond Valley blue cats?

I didn't even know DVL had blue cats. That's interesting.

Every lake (like DVL) that gets Colorado River water has blue cats and if large enough, stripers. And quagga mussels.

Yeah, but is there such a population that someone can actually target them?

Or is this a once in a blue moon ...

Re: High end Bass gear in Salt?

High end bass gear. I have had zero problems with Shimano and Daiwa bass reels corroding. I do rinse with freshwater after each trip. I use the smaller baitcasting reels (mostly loaded with 6 lb mono) and 2500 size spinning reels. Most rods are very corrosion resistant, even the cheap ones. BFS ...
