Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

I generally do not have problems with wind knots on a spinning reel. I have been using Nanofil (discontinued), Gliss and J-braid. I do have problems with light braid (<12 lbs) digging in on a baitcaster, I tried https://www.amazon.com/FINS-Windtamer-Braided-Fishing-Line/dp/B0DD828CND?th=1 which some ...

Re: Lucky Craft, wind knots.

I won't go into all my braid strategies, but I don't usually try to minimize diameter because it's almost all thinner than the leader material.

Those are nice reels, William. I remember you mentioning the Luna, and for a while, I pursued used 252 and 253, but someone else got them!

This would ...

Re: Fish ID please

Maybe the hardest fighting fish normally caught in the bay. FYI, you can identify a fish on the spot using Google image search on your phone. Late evening or early morning close to shore with a topwater or jerk bait is the standard method to fish for them but lots are caught otherwise too. They roam ...

Re: California Boater Card

If the rental boats had 100+ HP motors, it would make sense to require a boater card but the rentals at city lakes are way less than that.

Jet skiers should have to pass an IQ test. Seems like most of them would fail.

Must be tough on a marriage if you run over your wife and sever both of her ...

:D

A real law that would work is to require all concessionaires to check boater's cards, and if they don't, they are also liable if something goes down.

But then revenue goes down, so here we are.

Revenue or ...

Re: My BFS

I have a few rods where I wouldn't mind some extra handle length for longer casting from a float tube. What materials did you use and where did you get them?

I would have expected the rod blank would have extended almost to the end of the handle. How far from the end does it typically extend?

I ...

Re: New guy just trying to figure it out.

I think the shore (float tube and kayak also) ticket only entitles you to one vehicle but up to 2 people. Boat ticket gets 2 vehicles and up to 4 people. But with either, $30 for each person beyond the ticket holder.

They aren't always that picky at the gate so they might let a 2nd vehicle in on a ...

Re: What type of float tubes are allowed?

Do they allow people to fish from Standup Paddle Boards?
Has anyone seen that out there?
I have a buddy who fishes that way exclusively and wants to know.

Sounds OK as long as you are wearing chest waders since it is a drinking water lake with no body contact allowed. That they will be strict ...

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week

I posted this a while ago, has tips that should help: https://www.sdfish.org/viewtopic.php?p=18882&hilit=spotted#p18882

You are probably fishing too fast, you want the lure to touch bottom often for maximum effectiveness. If you are not feeling the line, you may be missing bites. Hopefully you are ...

Re: New to shore fishing and skunked for a week

A implied message from Carpkiller's post and my post is that the bass like grass. You might be tempted to fish off the rocks in grass free water but there will be a lot more bass in weedy areas. In some spots, you might even want to wade out to fish.

Re: Mission Bay on the tube

The Outcast float tubes are very comfortable, whether the Fish Cat or Super Fat Cat and whether foam or inflatable seats. I can fish 14 hours straight at Barrett without a problem.

The Crush City baits are nice too. I especially like the BLT on a Ned head.

Carpkiller has some Cumberland tubes he ...

Re: Barrett Bonanza June 21 Report

Predator-prey cycles are well known. It would take a huge amount of shad to keep the bass in the lake well fed, that would not be practical.

When the bass are over populated, the shad population will crash followed by a crash in the bass population. Then the shad population will increase followed ...

Re: Barrett Bonanza June 21 Report

So if you wanted to disrupt the predator-prey cycle to improve bass fishing, here is what could be done:

1. Introduce new prey species. In particular, go for the most invasive prey possible like round gobies, rusty crayfish, red shiners, killer shrimp and silverside minnows. Good luck getting that ...

Re: First ever!

You might consider wearing a light colored shirt, thin sun gloves and a wider brimmed hat. Dip hat and sleeves in the water, drape a wet towel around the neck and splash water on your thighs. Roll waders down if you are wearing them. At Barrett, those things keep me comfortable to at least 100 ...

Re: Did you GUT hook a bass?

19 minutes is too long to watch. I just bring my needlenose thru the gills and then the hook readily comes out, especially if barbless like it is supposed to be.

Re: Burn Out?

I do like to change things around, I don't do one location enough to get "burnt out". So over the course of a year, I will have trips to the bay, Barrett Lake, Eastern Sierras and offshore. San Diego Bay is my most common spot but I have several locations there I will fish. I will often try out new ...

Re: 2026 Barrett poll/ideas?

I had a great meeting with the City yesterday. A lot was discussed. Understand that the program at Barrett is truly unique to both hunters and fisherman. They want our input on what we like or dislike about it. The poll below is a question that was asked to me. After thinking about it I thought ...
