I started the holiday weekend with a sunrise session at Mission Beach with the incoming tide, from about 6:30-9:30.
I caught one perch early on but spent the first hour or or so fighting large clumps of grass/kelp. I was worried for a bit that the morning was going to get cut short because of this ...

Mission Beach 1/18
Another beautiful, calm morning at Mission Beach. High tide, low surf, relatively calm currents. Other than a couple early clumps of grass, similar to yesterday, the water was clean.

Re: Fish recipes
Been making fish cakes recently as I try to eat my way through the whitefish in my freezer from an inshore fishing trip a month or so ago.
Pretty simple recipe. Steam the filets for 5-6 minutes until opaque and the fish flakes easily. Add to bowl with a couple tablespoons of breadcrumbs (I prefer ...

Re: 1/22 L/C Mission Beach
Nice! I'm convinced perch will eat anything. The finger-sized perch regularly take my lugworms that are as big as they are!!

Mission Beach 1/25
Nice morning at Mission Beach, fished the low tide from 6:30 until about 9:00. Not much current, clean water with almost no seaweed whatsoever. Waves just high enough to keep things moving in the sand.
Nothing of note (quality-wise) aside from 9-10 perch, but I was catching them at a pretty steady ...

Re: Anyone seeing Macks at piers?
Not personally, and this doesn't quite answer your question, but I've seen reports in other social media groups of mackerel being caught recently at Embarcadero Marina by the convention center.

Mission Beach 1/31
Fished the incoming and then outgoing high tide for a bit this morning, from 6:30 until around 9:00. Seemed like the tide was coming in even farther than predicted and the surf was strong, even if not particularly large. Swirling currents were moving my line everywhere including a few gnarly tangles ...

Mission Beach 2/1
Made it out to Mission Beach this morning to get some fishing in before peak high tide. It was messy. Couple line snags in the grass, including a full on snap, strong currents, and very powerful waves. Surf report says 7’ but I’m sitting at Woody’s drinking a coffee and the water is coming up to ...

Mission Beach 2/7
Fished the low tide at Mission Beach this morning. Slow morning with little action and few bites, though I did manage to pull in two medium sized perch. Lugworms were the only things getting any interest as the mussels were all but ignored.

Mission Beach 2/8
Much better conditions at Mission Beach with the later low tide. 6:15 until about 8:00, six perch total. Most mid size, a couple finger sized. Lug worms were the easy preference for the fish. Mussels got some nibbles but only one actually caught on them. Interestingly (or not, I’m not sure if it ...

Mission Beach 2/14
Fished peak to outgoing high tide at Mission Beach, from about 6:15-9:00. Would’ve finished earlier but was waiting on the wifey to wake up and make her way out for Valentines coffee and brunch.

Mission Beach 2/21
Nice perch bite this morning at Mission Beach!
I had my line in the water by 6:30am and fished the incoming tide from low to about its halfway point, and wrapped things up by 9:30ish.
It took a little longer than usual to see any action but once I did, I caught 12 perch throughout the course of ...

Re: Mission Beach 3/2/2026
Bummer. Nice weather though! I played nine holes of golf this morning, trying to enjoy the last of our early sunrises before the clocks adjust. Granted, in another month or so we'll be back to earlier daylight and in just another few months we'll have really long days. But still - a couple weeks of ...

Re: Mission Beach 3/2/2026
Joe, we have not met but im in mission quite often. Perch killer Bill told me about you. We caught 10 yesterday using Gulp sand worms(long ones). A few of them were approaching 11". I was at T-12 or where it used to be. I'm hoping we have wide open conditions here shortly.
Nice!! I was not able ...

Re: MIssion Beach 3-7-2026
I was out there too… unsure where you were, exactly, but I was set up a bit farther north today. I could see tower 20 to my south just a little ways down the beach and I saw one other person fishing, nobody to my north until I left around 9:00 when I saw a small group of 2-3 people fishing.

Sounds like both of you guys fought the fight, and beat the skunk… How was the wind down there?… Pretty breezy up here in LA/ OC…
Butch..
My session was mellow, but I was done by 8 am. It was *cold* until the sun came up and hit me in the back!
Same experience, of course. I stayed about an ...

Re: Mission Beach 3-14-2026
I was out there this morning, too, but I must’ve been a bit north of you as I didn’t see anyone else fishing at all.
Agreed on conditions. Pretty calm as the morning high tide receded. Little bit of a northward current but it didn’t seem persistent or even all that strong. I was trying to walk it ...

Re: Mission Bch 3-16-2026
Jacksmelt was not among my initial guesses when it hit! Decent fight. Maybe they are more common than we think (?) but the strategies / baits / lures surf fishermen normally throw at them doesn't result in many catches? They do occur in the diets of CA sea lions at the Channel Islands, though in ...
