Canyon 9/26
Hit Canyon yesterday with my Buddy Hoppy. We slid onto the Ski Arm around 6:30 am, all Full of Coffee and Anticipation. The Launch ramp hasn’t been great for me this season so I hit the water kicking and went straight down the Arm about a Quarter mile. Of course it is so Bassy everywhere you look, you just have to hit those Fishy Looking spots. Little cove in the reeds, a tree in the water, a rocky ledge. I slid a rare perfect cast, skipping right into the back of some sparse Reeds with an 5 inch Texas Rigged floating Fluke. The water settled and I gave it a twitch. Two Bass from opposite directions unloaded on that thing, colliding in the process. Amazingly my rod was almost yanked out of my hands as one of those Bass was successful and had that Fluke squarely in her lip. Great fight with a really healthy Fish. I did that twice more working the Coves up to the Bouys. I’m sitting on 3 Bass, out of maybe 7 blowups on the Fluke. Not a great average, sometimes I’m 6 out 7 in the similar situations. I think some days they suck it down and some days they half ass it. So I crossed over to the other side to fish some steep rock wall punctuated by some fishy looking coves. I’ve done well here working swim Jigs here so I started fishing a 1/8 ounce Jighead and 3/12 inches of a 5 inch ZMan Trout Trick glued on with a little gel Crazy Glue. It was the correct choice as I added 11 more Bass to the count. All nice looking fat 2-3 1/2 pound Bass. Every Fish completely sucked down the jig, luckily there was plenty of room in there to get the Jigs out. I had pinched the barb when I figured I was on an exceptional bite just to get the Jog back on the water quicker. Shad leaped out of the water where most of my casts landed. Plenty of Baitfish is a good sign. I ended up with 14 Bass. Hoppy never gave up the Topwater and topped out at 3 Bass out of “Tons” of blowups. All in all a great day to be on the water, and I’m glad I got on a good number of Bass. If I wouldn’t have crossed over to the other side I prolly would have ended up with 3 Bass too.
