Newport Surf
Hit the Newport Coastline this morning with my young friend Jake and his buddy Landon. We were to meet at the spot at 6 am. I got there early and filled a bait bucket with Sand Crabs with quite a few Softies, maybe due to the Full Moon period. I threw my first cast at 6 am and was on a nice Corbina within seconds. Man they pull hard on six pound. The great thing was I landed four more on successive casts. The young men showed up with Mom in tow and I stopped fishing and started tying on leaders I had pre-tied the night before. Then it was on! We were catching Corbina, Walleyed Surf Perch, Barred Surf Perch and Leopard Sharks every cast. It was a Fish Party! I had to stop fishing and do “ Deckhand Duty” for a while and go catch more Sand Crabs, which gets easier as the Tide rolled in. The Corbina came in waves, and we had several double hookups, line crossing, follow your fish! Insanity for four hours until the Beach Crowd showed in force and ignorance. A Busload of Green Fluorescent Shirted kids ran in Mass thru our fishing gear and into the water. That was the end, somehow nobody got hooked. They came from behind us with no warning or supervision. Ah, Summertime in Newport Beach. Our final count was 28 Corbina,1 giant Walleyed Surf Perch, 1 Barred Surf Perch and a Leo. I’m tired. What a fun trip topped of by Breakfast at Rubys. This is why we Fish.

Re: Newport Surf
When are we fishing, Butch? It would be nice to not have to do Deckhand services while sneaking in a fish here and there…

Re: Newport Surf
It won't be for a couple of weeks at least... I'm trying to get the motor home ready for a family camping trip this week and then the camping trip after that... Maybe you could use your "Deckhand services" to teach me how to fish again,Bendo wrote: Fri Jul 11, 2025 6:30 am When are we fishing, Butch? I teach Kids, I learn from my Peers.
Together we catch more fish.
I’m in the process of completely refitting my 18 foot Invader CC. NEW 115 4 stroke, Hydraulic Steering, new pumps, thru hulls and electronics. Thank you highest Stock Market ever…, just a bonus. All my fishing local partners have either moved or passed away. The rest are 100 miles away.

Re: Newport Surf
Too bad the fuel is the highest ever. Living in Newport... May not be a problem for you though. Haha
Last time I was in Newport, the sportfisher I was on was docked at Jimmy Smith’s house on Lido island for two weeks. That guy was an animal. He would wake up in the morning like Charly on 2 and a half men and get a whim to fly his private jet to Vegas and gamble. He’d be back in the late afternoon with some good looking flight attendants.

Re: Newport Surf
I live in Anaheim, 70 year old Home with a virtual Boatyard in the back yard. Divorce at 40 had me deep in debt. I was forced to retire at 58 due to catastrophic injury. 6 years later I’m finally able to get back my big Boat and be able to run it. So it’s not all fairy tales and riches. I’ll be eating a lot of fish….and Lobster. Maybe a Sea Gull on a bad day.

Nice! Way to go getting back on the horse. Not sure how sea chicken tastes though…

You are way more active than me, and I haven't had all of those problems... Good for you...
