San Diego mayor proposes cuts to lake access in budget plan
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/san-d ... 7ccd&ei=10
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has proposed reducing operating hours at several city lakes as part of efforts to address a severe budget deficit. The cuts, which could save over $622,000, are included in the mayor's budget proposal for 2026, unveiled earlier this month.
The plan would significantly reduce access to popular recreational areas.
The city detailed the proposed cuts, giving CBS8 this list:
Currently, Miramar and Murray reservoirs are open 7 days a week. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 2 days a week, Saturday and Sunday. This provides a $414,176 savings.
Currently, San Vicente and El Capitan reservoirs are open 5 days a week, 12 months a year. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 4 days a week. This provides a $36,898 savings.
Currently, Sutherland is open 3 days a week, 7 months a year. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 2 days a week. This provides a $11,753 savings.
Currently, Hodges is open 3 days a week, 9 months a year. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 2 days a week. This provides a $65,322 savings.
Currently, Otay is open 3 days a week, 12 months a year. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 2 days a week. This provides a $24,261 savings.
Currently, Barrett is open 3 days a week, 9 months a year. In the proposed FY26 budget, they will be open 2 days a week. This provides a $14,350 savings.
The final budget must be approved by June 10. As discussions continue, many San Diego residents hope to maintain access to these popular outdoor spaces.

Re: San Diego mayor proposes cuts to lake access in budget plan
If you try to check this information, there may be some errors. Barrett isn't open 9 months a year, it's open 5 months a year, so he's already saving a bundle, just by clarifying. For the overview, I put together this little chart.
Can someone explain why hodges is $3K per day open? It's almost 10X San V or El Cap. This feels like an error to me. I'm guessing there may be a lot of errors in this and nobody is paying attention.

You cant tell me that at $20+ per fisherman that they cannot afford to leave the lakes open! Go back to the Iron Ranger system on week days that was used in the past> We always get screwed!

A lot of the lakes already have iron rangers or automated kiosks. Only the city would argue they save money by not collecting money.
Is there any sort of detailed accounting report for the lakes?

Geez, I only use iron rangers for decades at every city lake that I fish at. It is easier and nobody need to be there for me to fish.
So the only staffing for that is someone to collect the money and fill the ranger with envelopes.
Maybe crazy, but an online petition to support keeping our lakes open is a thought, but even crazier or not maybe a Go Fund me page? Word of mouth would be very important and using any social media to get he word out on trying to stop this action against us fishermen. If people unite...I bet lots of $$$ can be raised. Problem is would the City take it? Maybe it can help keep the lakes open a day or tow more?
The lakes will be open to walkers, runners, bikes etc. from what I gathered but why don't they collect a dollar to use the lake for that recreation? Just a thought.

Just another in office not thinking of the people. I have fished other states and you don't even see workers. Here you see 3, 4, 5. Do they work 5 days a week. Seems if they do it would be in there best interest to open more days.

There will be no job losses, or money saved.
The rotating Friday’s they close now, still have the same overhead.nobody loses hours or benefits. They move people around making a smoke screen. It’s not like selling a commodity , close today sell it tomorrow. Once the day is over, theres no getting the day back.
They also need to factor in the money collected as a loss.
But the bottom line is the city is the city. To increase sales, sell sandwiches, donuts, coffee . I think Starbucks does that.
. They don’t make money with empty building.
