Murray report 3/28

Post by Dannicus »

Most of you know I fish Murray 3-4 days per week.  I am retired and I go there after dropping the kids off at school.  I fish until it's time to pick them up and head home.

I've been averaging 7 fish per day almost exclusively BFS fishing.  The most productive bait has been a tiny green pumpkin Brush Hog on a Keitech 1//16 oz. Mono-spin jig head.  Most are in the two lb. range with the occasional 5-6 pounder sprinkled in.

Early in the morning I've had success casting to the bank and pulling it back.  After about 9 AM they seem to move back out to 10, 15, and even 20 ft. depths.   The water temp. has been about 62° and I haven't seen any fish bedding yet.   I did see a kayak guy land an 8 pounder on an A-rig; casting out to 30 ft., letting it sink, then slow rolling it along the bottom.  I don't fish A-rigs.  Too many hooks, and I don't want to sink my old fat ass.

Anyway it's been pretty good out there.  If you make it out, be sure to say hello to the old guy in the cowboy hat.  Always fun to meet folks from the forum out on the water!

Tight lines!

Nice report and great results. congrats.

ps I'm in the same boat concerning A rigs, never thrown them, no interest in starting either.

I hear you. I know they work but somehow it just seems huge and unwieldy. Of course I am much more of a finesse guy anyway so...

One of my favorite baits to throw. Had countless doubles and it’s the only bait I’ve seen catch three fish on one cast. They also catch the good ones. Nothing like having a fish rip drag in the strike, and then start doing death rolls when you realize it’s not that donkey you hoped it was!! Sliming up your line and destroying the rig!

I modify the finesse A-rig into a "chandelier rig' putting 4 willow blades on the outside arms with a short wire leader in the middle to extend it back a bit with a 1/16-1/8 oz/3" swimbait trailer. Only one hook to deal with and the same illusion of a small school of fish. The straggler gets it every time.

Hey Dannicus, I'm with you on BFS, but I am willing to throw a double fluke, you take a 3-way swivel and do a dropper on your main line with a shorter terminal line. It's like the umbrella rig for the BFS crowd.

Nice report. We were there last week on Friday and didn't see you.

The double fluke rig is another epic technique. Many doubles when the shad are foaming

I'll have to try that out! The kids were on spring break last week so I only got out one day.
