San V...getting tougher!

Post by Mcfish »

I put in 7 hours of hard work yesterday...with only 4 bass landed, and 2 others lost in the trees. The water temp was 59 at sunrise, 61 by 1:00...and it definitely felt like winter at launch. I started out looking for the fish that have been running the brush lines the last couple weeks, but only found a couple random fish. I saw some fish sitting in 8' of water, threw everything at them..they could care less! I took a gamble and went out and sat out on a point where I often see breakers, but after 20 mins...nothing! I threw a dropshot while waiting and picked up a fish in 25' of water. I was ready to bail on my point, but then some busters showed up!! I picked off 3 fish out of the school and had big hopes for the rest of my day..but nope, that was it..5 minutes of topwater. I picked up a couple more dropshot fish in 25' of water which I farmed in the deep trees! The prevailing opinion on the lake is that it's getting nasty tough. The deeper fish and bait seems pretty scattered and I didn't really see anyone throwing spoons or A-rigs at them. I think we have a couple tough months ahead of us! Your best shot now is probably a bucket of shiners!

"When things get tough, the tough get even tougher".....I'm saying that about you McFish and a few other bass fishermen who rough
it early in the cold temperatures and fish under tough fishing conditions. And here I sit here thinking how cold it must be to get up and
brave the cold so early in the morning(heck, I didn't get to the SD River yesterday will close to 10). Glad to see you found a few bass
as it seems the fishing conditions sure change a lot this time of year with dropping water temps. Makes some of the bass kind of moody...ha ha
Thanks for sharing and look forward to more winter fishing posts from ya.......pretty sure you will not be winterizing your boat.
Tight lines always buddy :-)

A few years back, I float tubed Lake Mary in the Sierras in 19 degree air temps..so now i just tell myself that temps here in the 30s aren't too bad in comparison.

Ha...the entire lake is pretty much trees from 0'-50' deep...mostly manzanita, sumac, some oaks, and a few sycamores.

Went out yesterday and cold winds in the a.m.. As stated, water 59 and 62 by 2pm. we got our five fish out of the trees, thank you Lord. Saw a few busters, but most action was Wolfpacks along the shoreline. I got the largest one on Topwater -boot tail fluke. Buddy got his with D/s on others.

Been getting tougher by the day. Fish in the bushes will eat if you can get a bait to them I time. If the wind comes up at all the dropshot bite is there in deeper water (20-50’). Have fished jigs, C rigs, and bigger worms deep with no love.
