Heartbreak lake

Post by camobass »

The heartbreak is you get turned around on the quagga mussel inspection 90% of the time from a ridiculous reason. Example, a eucalyptus leaf that fell in your boat the morning you drove up and you missed it. Or condensation.

After much praying on the way there, we passed the inspection. What a relief

Anyways, surface temp is around 64.5. ALOT of new water. Tossed the 250 all morning until my new shoulder couldn’t take it anymore for nada. Switched to plastic. Missed one and stuck one at 3.96lb. Fish was ice cold

Any guesses which lake?

Morena. Nice job out there and great to see someone post a report from there. I have heard of some big bass have been caught in middle of April and early May. A buddy a few years back caught a couple DD's and some other fat ones with large brush hogs. I remember fishing it in the 80's which was lots of fun. The water was so low for so many years and have not been up there much. Hopefully the rains have helped. Tight lines and thanks for sharing.

Water is up ALOT. Still using primitive boat ramp, old pavement loop. Water is close to original ramp

Nice one! Was planning on heading up there tomorrow. Will post a report. Any advice on passing the inspection? I just have a small Gregor so no livewell and it lives in my garage and should be bone dry.

Also did you see any carp in the shallows? Plan on bringing a fly rod to mess around with those if the bass bite gets slow

Dude, bring chamois or a bunch of rags. We spent four hours detailing the boat the day before. Only to wake up at 4am to major condensation- over a gallon easy across the whole boat and every compartment. (Aluminum boat)

Make sure there is zero dirt/debris, drain plug is out, no leaves, no water in your prop exhaust, bunks are dry, no damp life jackets or dock lines/anchor ropes etc. No mud any where.

It was very extreme a few years ago. They would turn you away if you had a tiny tear in your carpet, literally anything. There was a younger guy that seemed to get a hard on for turning people away. Paul blart. I boycotted the lake for years after being turned away 5 times in a row for nothing quagga related. Many others I know did too. It was better this time around. They have a form to fill out too.
We stopped at the entrance and sponged out all the condensation that drained to the Bilge on the drive. Then stuffed chamois up under the tunnel.

Tons of carp all over the lake like normal. Out in open water as well as eating off all the stickups. A lot of bass deep and 20-25’ as well as some cruisers. Water is stained, starting to clear but saw zero bed fish. My fish came tighter to a steep bank but probably still in around 10’. Prepare for wind. We got blown out at around noon but stuck it out.

Who inspects the ducks, geese, and coots that frequent the lake? Quaggas will get there one way or another!

Exactly. I talked with the head guy during covid when sweetwater asked him to get involved about the Loveland fiasco. Told him about cuyamaca’s hot water wash down and everything involved. If you don’t pass inspection, you pay $10 for washdown. Zero turnarounds. He said they would consider it but never did. Pretty dumb because so many don’t attempt going up there. A simple washdown would add a lot of commerce to a once thriving lake town that’s pretty much dead.
