Lake Murray Surprise! 10/26/23

Post by Dannicus »

was fishing an underspin and landed a few 2 pound largemouths when suddenly something slammed my lure and bent my medium heavy rod over and started peeling drag.  Turned out that a 15.2 pound catfish thought the swimbait looked tasty as well!

Must’ve been a good fight. Always fun to catch a heavy catfish while fishing for bass.

It was! Pulled me around in the float tube for a while.

I'll take any fish over 2lbs at Murray these days...very strange year on the City Lakes! Congrats!

Almost the exact same thing happened to me a couple years back at the Murr. Fun fight, but a little disappointing when you find out it's not a bass.

I started float tube fishing in Colorado for trout as a kid in 1972. I switched to bass fishing when I came to San Diego for the Navy in 1982. I have been trying to catch a double digit bass ever since - over 40 years! Although I have caught hundreds of bass and many dozens over 5 pounds, my PB is an 8.9. I thought for sure this was it, so yeah, a bit disappointed, but still fun!

I've landed numerous double digit trout in my life, even a few tuna, and a couple of halibut from my float tube. Earlier this year I saw a guy pull in an 11 pound bass while he was trout fishing at Cuyamaca from shore, so I know they out there. I am retired, so I guess I will have to keep trying. Woe is me lol.

You never know when the big one will come! My 10's came on slow days when I only picked up a couple fish!
