SAN DIEGO — A 12-year-old girl on a paddle board was killed in a collision with a personal watercraft Saturday in Mission Bay, authorities said.
The collision occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the De Anza Cove area, Lt. Adam Sharki with the San Diego Police Department told FOX 5 Monday.
An 18-year-old man, of Bellflower, California, was using a personal watercraft when he collided with the girl who was paddle boarding, according to law enforcement.
The victim was brought to shore where first responders took over to perform CPR. She was then taken to a hospital, but later died of her injuries, Sharki confirmed.
Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, per police.
SDPD’s Harbor Unit is investigating the incident

Too sad. I was out there two weekends ago for the first time and had my kids on the board with me. They should probably bouy off the mouth of the cove and just leave enough open for boats to get in and out. Hopefully no one would go charging in there that way.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Just last week my wife was trying to book a water-skiing family lesson for my daughter’s 9th birthday. She was all set to book it for this coming Saturday afternoon, but I told her I had zero interest in being on the water on a Saturday afternoon, especially with our three young children potentially in the water.
She kind of made fun of me for being dramatic, but instead booked a weekday outing.
When I showed her the article about the young girl’s death today, she was shocked and immediately wanted to cancel the lesson completely.
So sad what can happen in an instant.

5 mph speed limit within 100' of a person or vessel: https://www.sandiego.gov/lifeguards/safety/boatreg
5 mph speed limit in De Anza Cove where it happened: https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/ ... baymap.pdf
I don't see many jet skiers going 5 mph or less. Every few years, it's usually a jet skier that dies or is seriously injured.
When float tube fishing <200' offshore, I have had them go between me and the shore. Doesn't matter that there is lots of space out in the middle. And I have seen their wake knock paddleboarders over.
