Big bay 7-29

Post by Hook1fred »

Hit the big bay today. Launched the whaler at 830 am outta shelter which was a little crowded with the right side of the loading dock out of commission. I went out in guide mode taking a buddy and his 8 yo son out both of which have very little fishing experience. Needed to get the boy on fish so we caught a hundred of so mackerel near the bait barge. I couldn’t handle it anymore so I brought up drifting north Island for halibut. Set up drifting and within 5 min we’re on with our first Hali a cute 12 incher. Second fish off the drift was a stout 14 in spottie and fought like a beast. I haven’t threw a line all morning and finally got my chance when the boy wanted a break for lunch. Threw a swimbait up against the jetty and was instantly picked up buy a nice fish. I saw it and I thought for sure it was a keeper Hali. I almost gaffed it since I forgot my net but thought just to be safe I’ll use my grippers. Haul it up and it was just short by half an inch close call 😅 . I hook a calico shortly after and that was the end of my fishing for the day. My buddy ended the day with another short Hali and back to the launch we went. The launch was super busy with not enough room to tie up, hopefully they fix the right side soon

Thanks for the report. I went the day after you to Tidelands, also with a friend and kid, and got into a decent spottie bite, kid was stoked. Friend caught a nice hali which bit the crap out of his finger and gashed it pretty good....lesson learned, do not put fingers in the hali's mouth! Got a little windy and choppy later in the morning, so we called it a day.
