Mission Beach 3/29

Post by jwacky »

Fished north Mission Beach this morning. Got my line in the water by 6:30 and just wrapping up now at 9:30. Winds picked up as the tide started to recede, which makes it feel like a grind, which tells me it’s time to go home.

Pretty decent conditions today. Choppy water but smaller waves and swell. Not a ton of current, seems to be swirling a bit close to shore. No grass/seaweed, which is always a plus.

As for the fishing, decent perch bite. Caught 8-9, mostly small to medium, and one just large enough to turn into lunch later. The highlights though were some of the “summer species” starting to show up; caught my first guitarfish and corbina of the year, although both were small. The SNGF still pulled and buried like crazy and was a bit of a fight, but the 10” (ish) corbina came in easy. Mussels and lugworms were both working, though it was mussel that pulled in SNGF and corbina. Caught a couple of the little guys on Gulp camo worms.

Great session and thanks for the report! I plan on being near Tower 15 with a buddy tomorrow morning, probably hucking spoons. No issues getting the guitar landed on mono / fluoro I see? What line weight?

No issues. I’m using 15 pound mono, 15 pound fluoro leader. This was one of the smaller that I’ve caught since last summer, and my son caught a massive one late summer on the same setup. It’s a good fight although other than rays, they’re my least favorite thing to catch (so far).

Good luck tomorrow!

Nice going Joe. Good to see something other than the usual perchies. ;)
