10/6 El Cap

Post by Dfishin »

I took my tube out for a test after doing a few things. Biggest is changing my 30# thrust motor to a 45#. As i was setting up the tube i found that I had forgot my FF mount. So I'm fishing blind. Not knowing how my new motor would do with my battery I took off across the lake to the left of the 2 rocky points. Found them busting, so it was on just hit in the groups and fish on. That didn't last long. headed to the rocky points and nothing on the first rock pile. The second one first cast fish on. Second cast fish on and nice size came up for a swirl and then took off end up snaping me of. Then nothing, so i moved over to a point. I fished before and used my shallow spot lock, you will see in pick. They were there, i guess in 10' to 15' of water. After that slowed I went to the bubbler and they were busting with 5 yaks, a jon boat now me but there was plenty of room. You had to be ready to chase them. It was fun for a while then I got tired and went back to the ramp. My new motor was great and battery life also. So now I know i can hit some of my other spots a couple miles in. Ended with 16 and no dinks, all over 2 and 3 pounds. Biggest 3 1/2. All on DS, Jig and Flash J.

I tried to make it to the DMV this morning to work on registering my pontoon. Somehow today was the morning they open an hour late, so it’ll wait for another day. I forgot that this step will be the biggest challenge to get my rig ready. Adding the motor mount and rigging up my old pontoon will be the easy part haha. Hopefully I can commit to getting it done…

Nice to see that you got on em, and the new setup worked well for you!

Depends on the motor, what you are pushing and wind. I myself don't think I would try it, just from what I tracked on Monday. I went just over 3 1/2 miles and had 56% of my battery left. That is also using the motor to stay in a spots and chasing busters. Looking on google maps it's at least 3 1/2 miles to do what you want to do. In theory I could make it there and back. No true way to know until you do some shorter test runs and check results.

It’s funny to hear guys say they were “fishing blind” when they don’t have the electronics they are used to having. Just go back to the younger years when we were fishing from shore, or from a rental boat with nothing but your gut to guide you. Those are the best memories I have. Figuring it out on your own. Looks like going “Old School” worked for you’

Great job out there Dave!
Looks like you had a fun time and always a little better having a motor on
any floating device. Saves your energy for fighting fish. Thanks for sharing.
Tight lines always. :-)
