Strollin' Otay
Otay has overtaken El Cap as my favorite local body of water this year. Hadn't been in a few weeks and decided to make an early morning run in the tube.
Got in the water well before sunrise and was greeted by some busters and an early catch on a small subsurface walking bait. Threw a 110 Jr for awhile and almost every cast came back with a nice sized shad attached to it. That kept the birds around me fed for a bit.. LOL
After tossing topwater, fluke, etc with limited success I decided to try out the "strolling" thing. No FFS, just me and my float tube and a pack of Super Fish Rollers. I'd maybe spent a total of 15 minutes trying to "stroll" prior to today and not exactly sure what inspired me to try it today, but safe to say it's now something I have confidence in when around bait. And truthfully, not having a graph didn't hurt me at all. Let the bait sink to depth, retrieve it and shake that rod tip - then hang on. Ended the day with 9 fish, best 5 going for just about 14 pounds.
The best fishing day since September for me; am happy to gotten at least one more of these in before it slows way down for the winter.

Nice job out there buddy!
Heck, while I was kicking back in a sweatshirt and sweat pants, you were having a heck of a lot more fun
down at Otay. Looks like you had a blast experimenting with the stalling thing and and it sure looks like
it paid off. I will be trying more hover baits this winter as you inspired me to just to mix it up once in
a while and see what happens. Loved that pic with the shad in this mouth and your bait. Thanks for
sharing and tight lines always.

Bad from Harvey’s to the boat dock. Otay arm is the cleanest water.inthedeep2 wrote: Mon Nov 25, 2024 11:12 am sweet day on the water. i need to get out there this weekend, been lazy. how is the algae?

high in the water column pushing bait. I was not letting it sink more than a second before starting my retrieve.

Re: Strollin' Otay
Round 2 this morning was even better than round one. The fatties came out to play this morning. Couple on a bladebait to start the morning, a clone sized one and a chunky ~ 4pounder. Surface activity picked up and I immediately went to the fish roller. First cast, my bait got hammered and my drag started screaming. Biggest catch in the tube so far at 5-2! Also got me in the 5+ club for the year, I’d been stuck on 4.8 since March lol. Managed to get several more healthy fish, a couple over 3.5 and several more over 3. Finished the day with (I think?) 13 fish. Best 5 were over 19lbs.
My tube was losing air slowly and after a couple hours I had to get to shore and cut my day short but I can’t think of a better 2 hours I’ve ever had fishing before. Find the bait and you will find rhe fish.
Tight lines all!

Dang. I was all ready to hit the lake Sunday, woke up and my stupid back said, "YOUR NOT DOING S#@T". Great job for a short session on a typically rough lake.

Re: Strollin' Otay
Still going, fished from 5:30-9 this morning and landed 9, lost 5 including a BIG fish (minimum 5) that I watched eat my bait, shoot straight down and break me off.
Also very cool to see @Pourboy out there this morning. Was a super fun short morning for me before I head out to band rehearsal.

shirt sorting those tons of tackle not put back in its proper spot...ha ha
