Fatties at Otay 10/30
Only 5 fish on the day but all of them were fat and healthy. The biggest weighed 6.1 so took over the 5.6 Murray fish of last month for my second biggest of the year. The bass were actually busting down by the buoy line and I threw a bunch of TW baits at them but no takers. So I switched to a jig which accounted for all 5 fish.

Ain’t nothing wrong with jig fish. Nothing beats that pure contact hook set. Not sure what it’s like on a bfs…

I was using a Cashion rod which has a little more backbone than my Dobyns Sierra 701c. For jigs I really like Missile Bait's Ike's mini jigs in 1/8 for BFS. I have a lot of success pairing it with a 2.75" Yum Craw Chunk. They are cheap, still reasonably durable, and have a great action.

To be honest, there's nothing else quite like it. Most of my biggest fish this year are BFS jig fishing, and fighting quality fish on a BFS setup is a complete rush! By it's very nature you can feel every tick and bump on BFS gear. I am convinced it has made me a better jig fisherman overall.camobass wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2024 3:48 pm Ain’t nothing wrong with jig fish. Nothing beats that pure contact hook set. The hooks are generally lighter wire, so it requires less of a hook set, but I generally swing pretty good anyway. The flexibility of the rod is a big factor in mitigating what would otherwise probably be too hard of a set with light wire hooks lol.

Great job out there by the way. And between you and Early Release working me in that direction I just picked up my first BFS setup. I remember trying yours at Hodges that day for the first time. I did pick up a few micro jigs too. I’m excited to get my first fish on it! I tried this week at Hodges but no success on that. I did get 5 on my normal jig setup though. I guess I need to do my first Otay Video. Thanks for the inspiration!
By the way what size line do you use on your BFS?

That's some impressive fishing. I was thinking fishing has been a bit slow, but clearly you are on it. Now that Hodges is closed too, you may see me lurking around Otay.

I use suffix 10 pound braid to a flouro leader most of the time. Obviously braid is soft, light, and no memory so for me it lends itself well to BFS bassing. Also I only put about half a spool on. Being a bass guy I don't really need to worry about casting anything lighter than 1/16, so 10 pound gives me great distance with the weights I usually throwPourboy wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2024 7:18 am Great job out there by the way.
