TILAPIA IN LAKE HODGES (2024)

Hello guys,

Any signs of tilapia in lake Hodges this year? After the dam construction, when they released the water, I haven't heard any tilapia being caught anymore. Just wanna check around to see if they are still in there. Been there once last summer, near the ramp, but no signs. TIA.

Last time I tried was probably last spring. No luck for me either.

With Barrett closed this coming Weds, I think I'm gonna check out Hodges from shore with the goal of trying to find tilapia. Not expecting much other than some sun and relaxation. And probably some bluegill.

After the construction of the dam and the release of water at Lake Hodges, tilapia have become less commonly reported in recent fishing reports, which now focus more on bass and catfish. The environmental changes caused by fluctuating water levels and altered ecosystems might have impacted tilapia populations. Although tilapia were not visible near the ramp last summer, they may still be present in the lake, potentially in different areas or in smaller numbers. Checking local fishing forums or consulting with nearby tackle shops can provide more current insights into tilapia activity in the lake.

If they were the last fish to make it in the Salton sea, I’d imagine they wouldn’t be too impacted there

Yea, I thought so, too. I'm not too concerned about the environment, it's more like the construction for me. Maybe when they released the water, the majority of them got dumped out of the lake. I mean there is still some left, 'cause I've seen people caught them near the boat ramp and there is no way they got pulled from the boat ramp all the way to the gate, but just not as much as like before.

Didn't make it out this Wednesday so probably won't get out there until after Barrett season is over but I'm definitely gonna put some effort in eventually.

Don't really think there's anything that can wipe them out if a decent spawning population had already been established. I imagine people are catching them and we just don't hear about it because the people fishing for/catching them are not the fish report kind of people.

I gave it a try yesterday. Right dock, no luck, just some small bluegills/sunfish, caught a bunch of them. I'm planning to come back but at another spot, might do a little walking towards the left side of the dock, right at the cove or "point".
