Murray 'Gills

Fishing for bigger bluegills has been decent at Murray lately. A few on topwater but mostly on weighted flies, generally cast into deeper water. For reference, distance between end cap on butt end of reel seat and the front edge of the grip is 11". Rod is a 3wt 7 footer fiberglass custom built for ...

Creek Wade 6/13

Decided to wade a local creek, and was able to pick up several sunfish although the bass wouldn't cooperate. Was using an olive beadhead bird of prey from tfs that has worked well in the past for pretty much everything, although as of late it hasn't worked the same. My guess is the continued cold ...

Surf Fly Fishing Primer post from old SDFISH

The surfzone is an ever changing environment where the best locations on a beach can change from day to day, tide to tide, or even during a tide. Storm surges or heavy surf alter beaches quite rapidly. Some beaches, or even sections of beaches, will fish better on outgoing tides and others on ...

South San Diego Bay for the last couple of months

Been hitting San Diego one to two days a week for the last couple of months. Mostly between Fiddler's Cove area and south end of the Coronado Cays and from east to west.

Fishing has generally been good. A few slower days where the fish ate plastic grubs much better than flies but most days about ...

Redington Wrangler 690-4S review

Most of the hype, conversation, and advertising for quality fly rods revolves and the mid through high cost range but there are a still some pretty good rods for less than $200 from established fly gear companies that sell through brick and mortar dealer networks. Unfortunately prices have risen ...

Re: South San Diego Bay for the last couple of months

As the water cools down I will utilize slower retrieves more often. I use slow retrieves in the summer too but also faster retrieves. But the faster retrieves tend to be less productive during the colder periods. Still, I experiment to see what is working. But when the water is measuring 56º at the ...

South San Diego Bay Dec 11 - still great angling

Fished South San Diego Bay again this morning. Launched about 0630 and first cast around 0645. High tide around 0715

We both caught fish on the first cast and quickly caught several more. Five or Six long drifts today. One of those only produced a couple of fish each but the others were pretty ...

Christmas Eve morning SD Bay

Another good outing in the South Bay this morning. Started casting around 0700. Started catching around 0702.

High tide just before 0700. First couple of hours of the outgoing was pretty good then it slowed for us after but still getting a few here and there until quitting about 1100. Fairly calm ...

Ending 2023 on SD Bay.

Finished the 2023 calendar year out on SD Bay this morning. Light breeze and occasional mist. Fished from 0700 to 1020. Quit early due to recent back injury. Both of us had fish on with our first casts. Pretty steady bite until it slowed down where we were about 0940. Red/Yellow clouser minnows and ...

Re: MB quickie

Where in MB? Do you just rinse off your gear and keep it in your car for the day? Near De Anza Cove. At morning high tide, the fish were almost within (fly) casting distance from shore.

I keep jugs of fresh water in the truck and rinse off my gear after fishing. Flies/lures get thrown into a ...

Re: Spoon fed fishies

Nice. Did you make the spoons too?
I used a product called Kiley’s Spoon Skinz. However, there are templates on the internet you can download to print on clear plastic sheets from Staples and cut them yourself. I mixed in some fine glitter sparkles with the epoxy to give it color and flash. The ...

It's getting to be that time of year again for ...

... improving shore based bluegill fishing

Water is warming. Fish should begin spawning over the next few months.

If you are limit to being on foot and unable to fish deeper from a boat/tube/yak then the fish will be more accessible in the shallows in the morning and evening.

A couple from a two ...

Checkers Time!

Fair to excellent Calico fishing the last 3-4 weeks. Even with the red tide at times, we could find fish in patches of clearer water, but the catching has been better since the water cleared.

Flies, jigs, spinnerbaits all about equally effective. I have only been using flies. Best catching occurs ...

Spotties using new technique

My right hand has carpal tunnel and it's been painful casting and stripping line for extended periods of time.

I borrowed a technique used by stillwater guys, using a floating line, long mono leader, and break-away strike indicator. The idea was to adjust the leader length below the indicator to ...

Re: Paddleboard Tarpon Fishing: Report

Insanity is defined as doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a different result.I didn’t start landing Tarpon until I started using a circle hook thru the eye of my jighead. Somehow my landing percentage soared. Who knew?

Re: What kayak do you fish out of?

I have a Hobie Lynx which works great for my local lake and bay fly fishing… it’s 45 lbs so I can put it in the roof of the car super easy and not break my back! It’s good for the fisherman that isn’t bringing tons of tackle and works well for fly fishing too. I have a h-bar with a stripping basket ...
