Re: Where to throw LC tommorrow.

Well, I caught a 20-inch Halibut. I don't think the conditions were good, but I don't know for sure. Low tide Waves every few seconds and all churned up. Other than right on the reefs not much "structure" Grass after a few feet of retrieve on every single cast with the LC. I got popped good on the ...

First bean of the year, and some others...

Last week I got the first bean of the year, using SC. Most SCs are very small at this time of the year, but I was lucky enough to find a bed of large SCs. Was going for perch that day but got a beanie. Kinda small but a first is a first.

Burnout Beans

These 2 small corbina ate the same soft shell on consecutive casts. Burnout separates Torrance Beach and Redondo Beach.

Re: Straight braid or leader for lucky crafts/jerkbaits

I'm in the mono camp as well.. I just came back from Cabo and used braid for the reasons mentioned above... I have never had so much line problems in my life... Fraying line, wind knots, and break-offs of expensive lures... If I go back, it will be with mono... And I almost always use mono here ...

NOC In A Bit Of A Washing Machine 05/01

Clear cool day, with little to no wind, and a small swell, So looked good, huh?... The only thing besides the goofy tide, was for some reason the the area inside the far sandbar was churning pretty good, and a pretty fair side current... Almost like wind waves, but no wind... Not un-fishable, but ...

RAT Beach Corbina

I found 4 nice soft shells this morning and converted all 4 to corbina.

It is amazing how the corbina at my local beaches can tell the difference between hard and soft shell crabs. I use straight 8lb mono, so they don't seem to be line shy. My fishing buddies and I joke that they are "crab snobs ...

Thanks man! Haven't seen your post here much. Have you been fishing somewhere else?

It was a sargo. I took the picture a while after catching it and its color has changed by that time. Otherwise you would see that dark stripe.

Deja Vu to 2023

Hit the minus low this am at SMB & found a huge hole/trough. Alternated tossing an LC and a Daiwa SP for about 30-40 minutes but no takers. Conditions were good, low surf, no salad but no Sc's. No red tide that I could see. Some perch nibblers around but then a seal entered the picture and blew up ...

1st Outing of the Year

I don't typically start surf fishing until the school year is over, but my dad has been doing pretty well the past few weeks on the halibut and he convinced me to join him on Sunday morning. We were on the sand right as the negative low bottomed out, and found a couple of good looking troughs that ...

6/8 - 6/9

Noticed that red tide cleared from Encinitas / Cardiff area. Tried my luck both saturday and sunday afternoon / evening. Saturday I got skunked, sunday I got a sand bass. Even with weedless set up, there was plenty of salad to deal with on both days.

Re: Sd River Channel advice

I've caught 5-8lb bonito in there before on top water while they ran along the rocks next to the bank but that was during the day when they schooled up a bait ball

NOC 6/19

Met a couple of buddies for a little surf fishing... Ton's of small sand crabs everywhere, so doubling or tripling them up was the bait of choice...
Also tons of small BSP for the taking... We all got all we needed of them but were hoping for corbina or croakers.. One buddy got 3, and I got one ...

Re: Sd River Channel advice

Interesting, although I don’t think so. We heard a few splashes that were too big to be mackerel. Only way to know for sure is to go back and actually land one!

There are a lot of Mullet in there. They can get big, and they frequently jump out of the water. It's possible that is all you were ...

Re: Surf fishing rod and reel

There are a lot of setups that will work well in the surf. A solid entry setup is an Okuma Celilo 9'6" ML with a 3000 size reel.

Now "best" setups are really a matter of personal preference. I like to use a Loomis STR1263C 10'6" steelhead rod with a Tranx 200XG baitcaster. I use this rod ...

Pacific Beach Monday Oct 7

I fished the surf south of Crystal Pier from about 8-10am this morning. Water still cold, 64ish. Wave action down some from the weekend. Grass was light, not a problem. Sand crabs getting scarce except under pier, and sand crabs are generally getting smaller in size. Current pulled south to north so ...

Re: North County trips.

Krocodile is one of my favorites . You can use the single Siwash as supplied . I use a dressed treble that I tie that is almost the same length of the spoon . Just make sure the treble as it came from the factory has the single hook portion pointing to the concave of the spoon . Less snags . 5/8 oz ...

Re: Quality Over Quantity - Mid Summer Surf Report

Way to do, dude! That's awesome that you and the family got to work together to land that beast. As a dad who fishes with kids all the time, the chaos you described of the tangled line and not having all of your gear totally hit home for me. Fishing with kids is super stressful and awesome at the ...
