Great questions by Pipster. I would argue to start out like any other sport of hobby, start small and work your way up.
A cheap spinning combo (~$30-50) from your typical sporting goods store, 7 feet medium action will work, 10 lb nylon fishing line, size 6 hooks, and some weights (0.5 -1 oz). I ...

Re: Missing the Southern Cal weather - sorta?
Very cool, I'm so jealous. Hope you get to stay warm. We just had a huge rainstorm and some parts of SD were literally under water. House with 4ft of water flooding into them... check out the news. I hope everyone on this forum is okay.

Re: Crawdads vs. Jigs: Which Will Catch More Bass
As always, great video and editing.
What's the difference between green and red crawdads? Species? Diet? Life-cycle?

Re: Fly fishing from Tidelands
Have you ever tied a fly using your own hair? Serious question. I would imagine an enthusiast would have to try it just to see.
I have. Growing up, my mom was the family hairstylist, always cutting my extended family's hair. My parents got me one of those fishing encyclopedia books and they had ...

Re: Show us your goldfish!
Forgot this one....
For scale, the bluegill in the pic was about ten inches long...the bass and goldfish were just following it around after it was hooked.

Re: Where to throw LC tommorrow.
Guess we're all a little late to the party and you're probably on your way up as I type this. There's 50 miles of coast line between TP and DP, so I'd just find whatever is most convenient for you.
Halibut season is warming up and grunion are expected this weekend, so your LC might be the best bet ...

Perch at Blacks
Got into some perch and snagged a few shovelnose at Blacks on Sunday. 4 perch on the morning falling tide, and ended the day with a beefy 12 incher.

Re: Perch at Blacks
Nice perch... Those shovels must have been a tussle on the fly rod....
Butch
I snagged so many last year, the first one I knew it was a SNG and fouled in the tail the way it was fighting. It was about 2 feet long. Second one was smaller but hooked underneath the nose, looking like it was almost ...

Re: Perch at Blacks
Beautiful perch. Is there much structure at Blacks?
There's always a few cuts right at the trail to the gliderport, but I tend to find most success near the north trail by the golf course. Interestingly, google photos has a new heatmap feature of where pictures were taken so you can actually ...

Dumb question, but what is a cut? I checked out Blacks this evening near the North Trail, it was a low-ish incoming tide. It all looked like smooth beach to ...

I watch the top of the waves as they come in, and look for where the white foam disappears.

I also go to https://hdontap.com/#beach and watch the surf cams to "practice" reading the water.Rattus wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2024 3:31 pm Neuroshima, thanks. Re: What knot is the strongest for minijig
I’ve used the Improved Clinch Knot for 55 years. I’ve caught line Class Record Bonito, Halibut, Corbina, Spotfin Croaker on 2 pound test. Giant Broodstock Rainbows, and Steelhead on 6 pound test. I like it because it doesn’t use much line to tie, it’s quick, and it holds.
It's probably the ...
